this has probably been talked about on this forum before ,but im going to go over it again because i keep seeing threads on carb issues and such.first thing ethanol based fuels are NOT designed with your carbed distributor fired, early model engine in mind.it usually is stated that it contains 10% ethanol, but when tested is usually at 12-15%.this makes the fuel cheaper to produce but causes all kinds of issues.think about this,10 gallons of fuel contains at least one gallon of ethanol.modern fuel injected computer controlled engines can react to this fuel much better than your non variable timed and carbed engine can.add multiple carbs get multiple problems.you need a good fuel additive made to combat ethanol.or better yet dont use ethanol based fuel.you will see a difference.there is much research on the damage this fuel does to engines ,especially early carbed engines.do some research. secondly if you have a pushrod engine with a non roller valvetrain you need oil with zinc in it.otherwise you WILL destroy the valve train and eventually the engine.buy a quality race oil with high pressure additives, not generic oil made for modern engines, this includes most synthetics.modern engines are roller valve train designs.the later oil has the friction additives removed in an attempt to reduce emissions.being a professional auto tech for 25 years i have seen what these two items will do to our older cars and engines.before you blame a cam maker or carb company for your engine woes make sure you are using the correct fluids and oils for your application.i have rebuilt more carbs because of the poor fuel and rebuilt more engines because of poor oil choice then you can imagine.just a little advise.
Oh yeah,,we have talked about it,,,Randy's roadster. HRP FIRE !! it can happen to anyone. It happened to me !! <hr style="color:#e5e5e5; background-color:#e5e5e5" size="1"> Today was a nice, sunny Southern day in the 70's ... so I decided to get my old 32 ROADSTER out and take a little at***ude adjustment spin. I have owned this ROADSTER 30 years and it has never failed to brighten my day and improve my at***ude after a little drive. I left the house and headed out. A few miles from my home it just QUIT and I saw fire and smoke coming from the hood. I have a fire extinguisher so I jumped out and tried putting the fire out. Did not get it out. A friend came by and we got his fire extinguisher out and stopped the fire.
With that in mind, does anybody have any recommendations on brands of additives and oils to use? I've read so much about why so-and-so brand shouldn't be used that it's done my head in on what I should use! I see Sea-Foam ad Stabil brought up the most, and no recommendations on oil.
anybody know what kinda fuel hose is ethanol safe? recently i have had issue with the carb picking up some black trash on my OT mullet mobile ,,,the car is a recent build with everything new (2 years ago) and put a new holley on it about a month ago.. the tank, fuel lines everything was new 2 years ago,,,to me it HAS to be the fuel line deteriating inside.....someone said to use fuel injection fuel hose??? anybody know?
i'm sorry but i think i'd have to disagree with using a racing oil in a street car, unless you want to change the oil every other day. Has something to with the race oil not having detergents or some other additives or something..... Discuss.
