Hi everyone. I am currently rebuilding my father's old 1ton 1949 panel truck . for now it has its original 216. The truck came from New Mexico. It was a deluxe truck but some one stole the trim off it many years ago. The truck did a tour around the country some 30 years ago. It ended up in New York and until now has not been on the street. After my father p***ed it sat in a friends barn for 20 years. Now I am finally able to get started on bringing this beast back to life. Here's where I am at with the truck now. The 216 is running but all the brakes need work. The body is a lil rough but I am up for the task of bringing it back. The frame is solid and so is the wood bed. I have many extra body parts as we had a donor truck that was a school bus. I have smoked gl*** for it and a few other lil tricks. I want the truck to appear some what original but drive and ride like a newer truck. I want to drop her down a lil as she rides kinda high. I don't build rat rods any more. This truck is going to be my summer daily. Will tow a boat and carry motorcycles and family. I have been pampered by my daily driver (denali) So I want my A&D truck to handle like my Denali or better. So on to my plans for the build. first up is the motor. I have a totally built up street build 1970 Buick 455 . This thing is a torque monster. backed for now by a th400, unless I can find a m21 or something else . I am looking to do a jag swap for the front and rear. I found a donor car for 600$, near me but waiting to hear back from owner. I want the truck to have A/C, power steering and good brakes. I have been toying around with the idea of putting in a large window in the back. But thats a ways away. I'll start a build page and post pics there. Thanks for having me and i hope you guys like my build. Pete.
Thanks guys , I hope to start moving on this soon. I am waiting patiently for my turn in the shop. Stupid 70's firebird needs to go before I can move in.
Just ran the #'s on the "original" 216. Its not original. Its a p***enger car 216. GAM vin number. If there is a registry for these motors I wouldn't mind helping someone find the motor that goes with their car. But at least I don't have to worry about splitting up an original truck anymore. 49 I hope your ready for 450 horses.
My brother the hoarder has a 53 1 ton panel. been wondering how much is left as he got it from a N.H.junkyard filled with Corvair motors and radio tubes when I was a kid and Im 46 now lol. Wish I was older cause the yard was supposed to have several Willys too.
Sounds like a very interesting project Pete. I think that truck was just waiting for you to come along to save it!!!! Best Regards Jimbo
So spring is here and I am back at it. and I am going to town on the body. I built myself a huge electrolysis tank out of a spare s10 bed cap I had laying around. Right now I am using my 36 volt golf cart charger. it works pretty well. I am so stoked. remember to check in time to time as i will be updating regularly. Just about every day I am doing something. here is the driver side front fender in the tank. After over night in the tank I flipped it over and made sure the inside was clean. Primer before body work just to seal the metal. Since I pulled this fender I have put 2 hoods in the the tank. the second one has turned out much better. I also have almost finished the body work on the fender and I am very impressed with myself. Pics coming tomorrow. I just wanted to chime in with you guys, thanks for looking.
Welcome from Rhinebeck. That Buick will have plenty of balls to move that truck around. Before you plunk down any money on the Jag stuff, just look into a 85ish corvette front and rear suspension. Flat Out Engineering makes stuff for it into chevy trucks. I've got Jag in my Willys sedan, and Corvette in my 57 Chevy. Vette is easier parts wise. Good luck, Pat
Have you noticed that you have this posted in wring forum pages???? You were supposed to INTRODUCE YOURSELF here..
What? This thread may not belong here as it is turning into a build page but its in the intro section. -thanks man . My reasoning for the jag set up is that the jag is very close in track width to the A&D , better than s10 even. The weight is also closer , those jags were heavy. For now I am keeping stock suspension until the right deal comes along. Can anyone tell me what emblem came on the side of the 1 tons ? It should say 3800 correct? Both hoods say 3100. My mother insists That this blue hood that's on the truck in the pics above is original. Btw it was green under the blue. I believe the original color was that dark green. I hate that color. check back later today for finished fender pics and shots of the hoods after electrolysis .
I am back. My truck has been in the shop for about a month now. I have a lot done. I would like to up date but am considering starting a new build thread. Either that or if an admin would move this to build section. I am going to report my own thread.
