Penny says this is the last September show. Lots of jack***es parked around the park in Hot Rods and Customs in the NO PAY area. If you don't feed something, it dies! So congrats to all that didn't pay, but wanted to come. Maybe you can help kill the May Paso if you're not too busy.
The Labor Day WCK event at Paso has never had much support, and neither did the Los Banos show that preceded it. In my opinion it's just the wrong timing, following closely on GG Pleasanton and the summer's many events. I don't think the May event is at any risk from lack of support. I DO think it's at risk from irritable people in Paso, including the Police department.
Just got home from the show..Spent all three days there. It was nice to watch Hot rod Hon's car chopped by Gene Winfield without a huge crowd. We were told that they only had 180 pre-registered cars. There was probably only 100 showing. My buddy (True) off the H.A.M.B. won for best early hot rod for his 34 Ford . It was a small show and I did get popped by the cops for a 1st through 2nd burnout after they shut down the cruise early...but, we had a great time. EVILT
I always enjoyed the Sept. show as it was more low key, but have wondered when the plug was going to get pulled as it has never been very big and has been getting smaller. As to the May show your dead right that the biggest threat to it is a pissed off town and police force (ie: the biggest threat is participants acting like jack ***es to feed their "hot rod bad *** lifestyle" ego's). I'm afraid it is going to be a victim of its own success & size. Paso has events all the time now, from Wine festivles to cycling events etc... The hotel operators and some business' would miss the money the show brings in, but the behaviour of some of the folks who come to the show now can, & will drive the residents & city govt. to find it more of a pain & liablity than its worth.... I hope that does not happen, but can see it coming
The growing number of donkeys that have learned about our world from the Discovery Channel and Jesse James are now showing up to places like Paso because they've heard its the holy grail of "rat rods" or whatever it's termed this week. Tough guys with no car, or a pack of 15 ****s in one car trying to be mini-Mike Ness' ruin it for everyone... I liked it all much better about 8 or 9 years ago. I will say that I hit Sept Paso last year and had a good time, but I would be disappointed if I have traveled from out of state, or planned a whole vacation around it- Its just not the May event- And that's o.k.
Jay: That "mini Mike Ness" quote cracked me up! I'm adding MMN to my acronym list along with BPWB=Betty Page WannaBe. You hit the nail on the head though with what the "scene" is becoming......
Hey guys, at least y'all got all kinds of big events out there on the left coast. We lost the NSRA big meet here to Louisville, becuz the city fathers wouldn't back it up. In OKC if it ain't related to pigskin or horse ****, it ain't nothin'. DW
WTF did Mike ever do????????? Lets see, he has led a punk band for over 20 years, he likes cars. He has a family.............................Yeah, you *****s are real cool raggin on a guy that is more a HAMBer without ever posting than many here on the board. get off the slam Mike Ness bandwagon............did any of you see the post where he was hanging with HAMBers in Europe? ****s, all of you keyboard purveyers of whats cool.
Damn, Tman- how ya really feel? I personally like the term 'Fonzies'-I hope I'm not pissin' in any Henry Winkler fan's Cheerios here. "Cycling festivals", eh? Maybe we can have some Trad and Kustom Bicycle Rallies and run off the Mini Lance ArmstrongsOh ****-now I started something...
I couldn't say anything bad about Mike if I wanted too, for one cos I don't know the guy, and two, becuase the wife would smack me cos she loves his ***...... I like "Pompadorably Challenged".
Woah T-man I grew up in So-Cal listing to SD late at night on Rodney on the ROQ along with a lot of other folks. I like SD, I like most of Ness's music so I'm not ragging on the guy but will stand up and say that the "image" is a bit played to me, and all the folks who go over the top emulating it just look a bit silly to me now ( please note the caveat" over the top" bit! Just like all the Jesse James wannabes I see out and around now. All I'm going to say on the subject so lets see some photos of the event now!
You ****ing guys didn't get off the track of this post at all did you? Jesus Christ, follow the bouncing ball and try to sing along kids.
Yeah, I must have been listening to my Lawrence Welk 8-tracks 'cuz I missed it, too. But I "Googled" him and now I'm in the know....
Russ Beckwith took a bunch of nice photo's a the show this weekend. click the link for more... Paso September show Russ also took a buch of photo's of Gene Winfield chopping a 48 Ford coupe, unfortunately he could not stay untill it was finished... Gene Windfield chops a 48 Ford coupe
Groucho, I feel ya about the show. I hope the FONZIES (no offense to HAMBER FONZIE) don't ruin May Paso before I get to go to it....
I was going to make some snide comment about posting more pix of the chop since all of the people in the "No Pay" parking couldn't see it, but I have digressed far too much from the main topic.. or maybe I haven't. Alot of people might not feel their car is up to show quality, even if the standards are a little more lax than a Goodguys or something. I didn't enter my car @ The Lonestar Roundup this year because it wasn't finished in my eyes; next year will be a different story, hopefully, although I may have to pull it up there on my bicycle due to $8 gas prices
Speaking of Mike Ness.....He was in Paso last Sept. .....said he didnt even know a show was going on. Just was in town cause his wife wanted to shop at the antique stores....hahahahaha
This show would have been worth going to just to see Winfield chop the car...! Mid Seventies and still "kick'n ***"...!
Man....lots of p***ion on this one, I hope Ness doesn't lose too much sleep. As to he show, gotta say I was there all three days and saw far fewer "no pays" than I see at the spring show by hundreds. It is just a small show. West Coast is probably just going to the well too often and this is not the first of their shows to fold up. With Billetproof on the horizon and Primer Nats around the corner, it is a loss but not one that we will feel deeply. The show was fun but we all felt that it was over all weekend so lets move on. No blame is really necessary regardless of hairstyle. True
"Russ also took a buch of photo's of Gene Winfield chopping a 48 Ford coupe, unfortunately he could not stay untill it was finished..." Wow! It is so cool to see that he did it with a torch! Amazing!
I think a lot of NO PAYS in May are because they CAN'T get in due to the limit being met. I think ALL of the NO PAYS this past weekend are people just being CHEAP! But, this is JUST an opinion. Next year they can be really cheap and not spend admission to the show or gas because they helped kill the show. Just another opinion. On a lighter note, it was cool talking in length to some of the car owners that are harder to approach in May. The new owner of Jesus' chopped 53/4 Chevy, and the guy with the 40 Desoto that looked a little like a Zephyr from the rear, and a very talented local artist to name a few.
Mike Ness and Jesse James comments notwithstanding... I had a blast helping Gene out. Here are pictures from both days as close as I could hold the camera while working. http://groups.msn.com/GeneChop2005/shoebox.msnw Geoff
This is a bummer... I had such a good time at the spring Paso I hate to see this happen with this one. It's such a good location for a show... If I were close enough I would have gladly pulled into the park and payed...
