Are pinewood derby races still very popular? We don't ever see them around here and I was thinking it would be fun to get more kids involved with our local car shows. I want to set up a track and timing system to take to the shows but am a little worried that there wont be enough interest, would like to hear if any one else has tried and what their experience was thanks
You might contact the Boy Scouts of America. They were the last group I am familiar with that still had Pinewood derby races.
I just used the search function and "pinewood" kicked up a couple hundred threads. Yep, still pretty popular.
I did a search also, maybe I didn't read enough but most of the threads are a couple years old, I will check with the boy scouts, thanks for the input
Cub scouts still do them every year. It is popular because you can get the cars at Lowes and Michaels craft store. You can get the cars at the local boy scout store. Kyle
there is also 2 race cities in nebraska for all american soapbox derby ohmaha and oglalla http://www.wildwestsoapboxderby.com http://www.omahasoapboxderby.org
We did a fundraiser last year and got nice new track made of aluminum with computer timing and electronic gate. The kids loved it almost as much as the dads!!!!
thanks for the info, I was just trying to get some of the local event's more family oriented, thought it would be fun to get the kids into it ,like building the cars all the way to the racing of them, we just don't hear about the pinewood races in our area.
we have some shows around here that have hot wheels racing for the kids,, and even bring new cars out for the kids that dont have one,, as soon as it starts everyone wants in and it gets pretty kool for the kids and parents
Thats an awesome idea! I think it'd be slow at first but I'd bet the farm it'd catch on. You know you'll have to have a cl*** for the old boy's too. Not only would my boy build one, but I'd jump at the chance to run my old racers down the slope again.
