I'm finishing up my frame for 31Av8. I would appreciate info on chatter rods, photos etc as it pertains to their use and installation.

Do you mean the anti-rattle springs for the mechanical brake rods?

I think he means the "chatter" rods that hold the tranny and engine tightly

In my opinion,I would not use any,,

On closed drive cars, the car is propelled down the road partially by the engine mounts, the thrust of the wheels transfers up the driveshaft tube to the transmission. This can cause the engine to move forward on its mounts, which causes the clutch to be released slightly more than it should. Then the engine rocks back, re-engaging the clutch. The whole cycle then repeats, causing clutch chatter. The rods just prevent this movement. They usually go from the bellhousing back to a rubber mount on the frame. It doesn't matter much where you put them as long as they hold the engine from moving. Some went from the motor mount bolt back to the frame by the bell, on the passenger side so as not to interfere with the clutch linkage and the starter.

I made my own for a non Ford engine application. The idea is to keep the engine from rapidly moving for and aft on the motor mounts causing the chatter. I used 5/16 rod and front upper shock rubber bushings and washers. I made an angle iron clip to bolt onto the bell housing. The chatter rod goes through a hole in the clip and nuts tighten it compressing the rubber shock bushings. The other end is bolted solidly to a cross member

Thanks to all for the response. I guess chatter rods are my next sub-project.

Hurst used to sell what they called "anti chatter adjusters" along with their motor mount kits for early Fords (probably others) which consisted of a couple "L" shaped brackets. There was a threaded hole in the short side of the "L" for a bolt and the other end had just a hole to slide over the upper portion of the motor mount protruding thru the rubber biscuit. The idea was to tighten the adjusting bolt against the lower portion of the mount to eliminate the movement of the motor while engaging the clutch.

I never realized I needed em either until the local hot rod guru asked if I had some for a project I was working on. Took me a year and a half of searching before I found the right set. It seems as though folks would replace their flathead and completely disregard the chatter rods so I think a lot of them ended up in the scrap bin. JohnnyA

Genuine Hurst anti chatter clips. Used when an adapter is used for an OHV8. This is shown on a flathead pump but it was made to go against a Hurst mount but this shows how it was used.
