My headers are attracting way too much negative attention in my neighborhood and I want to quiet down a little. I have Sanderson Limefire headers off an 8BA flatty, and I don't want to run a full exhaust system. Does anyone know of a baffle or muffler of sorts that would hook to the end of the headers and maybe go inside the headers? Thanks for any info in this... Adam
I remember a while ago a saw some one on here make some using a tube with a series of holes running down it, and large washers at either end. Maybe someone else can find the link.
We used to build header/sidepipes on stuff. Get some old gl***packs and cut em open. There's almost always a tube with flat ends similar to what tysond is mentioning. Salvage that and mod it to fit. If need be you can "stuff it" with muffler insulation or steel wool before you weld it in. With the short header you have don't be surprised if it doesn't get as quiet as you want. Noise (sound waves) need to be captured (attenuated) in order to change tones. The effort is to eliminate certain "frequencies" and achieve a pleasent sound.
Summit racing sells baffles for stuff like yours. I think the company is called Car Chemistry or something similar.
Aren't some guys running dunebuggy(Volkswagon) header inserts? I remember looking at them on a VW site. They aren't very expensive.
Some info here http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=68062 Plus how I made mufflers for mine.
Bug Pack sells a fibergl*** insert that is about 10 bucks and takes 1 screw to hold in. It's for the BAJA bug tailpipe that looks very similar to the speedway kit. I did a tech on it a long time ago but I think it may be long gone...
I made baffles outta heavy-duty wire mesh. Roll it up real tight, shove it in the pipe and tack a wsher in there fir a retainer.
Talk to beatnick he has some baffels in his roadster and its not loud at all but has a nice tone to it still. I tried that washed trick on my car just stuck them in the end of the dumps behind the wheels and it sounded like ***! If you ever heard a 80's crown vic with a hole in the cat? thats what mine sounded like with the washer baffels.
That roadster of yours is one of my hero's. Haha. I really like the overall aesthetics of the car. Hats off to you for a great build. As far as lowering the decibles...scratch that. Just come on down to the dirty south portion of California and let'er scream. I've had a couple LOUD cars and no one in my city really gave a damn. I wonder why the lights in half the houses on my street came on when I came home anytime after 10pm...
I know I saved that thread but I can't find it.....I'll look in the tech archives.....I'll need to do this too, soon.... where did you get your pipes?
http://www.carchemistry.com/ccflanged_inserts.html Seems like these would be nice and easy to remove, maybe throw some steel wool in there as well? Thanks for all the ideas and info... Adam
Skip the steel wool http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=54765&highlight=steel+wool I have heard of using stainless steel scrubbers that you would use to wash a pan.
Here are some baffles from JC Whitney. A cheap fix for your problem at $3.99. We just put these in a T bucket. Just forced them up inside then spot welded them in to hold. Super simple to do. Here's the link... http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Browse/tf-Browse/s-10101/showCustom-0/refId-600001975/N-111+10211+600001975/c-10111
I Did Like Some Of The Others.....i Used A Cherry Bomb With Most Of The Shell Cut Off.......1 Bomb Cut In Half ....then I Used A Supertrapp Disk Welded To The End Of The Short End Of The Bomb....and Used A Dozen Or So Disks........ran 2 Self Tappers In The Bottom To Hold It In Place......the Car I Have Now ....i Used A Short Piece Of The Core From A Old Cherry Bomb.....welded That To 3" Washer That Was Drilled With 1/2" Holes That Was Welded To A 3" Collector Ring....that Bolts To The End Of My Headers......and Has The Appearance Of Open Exhaust....and Is Fairly Quiet...not The Prettiest Things But You Don't See That Much Of Them ........brandon
A local guy used a pair of gl*** packs. He cut them so just the round end and exit tube were left showing when they were installed...looked cool as hell...kinda like a bomb
Here ya go. TECH: El Cheapo Lake Style Header Baffle.Lots O Pics Only cost a couple bucks to make. I went to my local ATV/Dirtbike store and bought some header packing to wrap around them and it sounds great. Over 1000 miles and no troubles(cops or otherwise).
I run one of the Speedway Motors auger baffles on each side of my car. I think that 2 per side would have been wiser.
