Get in touch with your local machine shop. I have done some of this with old cam and crank gears. They work great. Gene.
Machine shops, Engine rebuilders, Diesel and farm machine repair places, s**** yards, etc... Shouldn't cost much being as the are throwing them out anyway.
When i was s****ping an old farm last year the s****yard had gears laying around, i got some for a friend that was using them for art too.
A friend who is a heavy equipment mechanic makes sculptures like that using large gears from Caterpillars. Check with heavy equipment repair shops.
