Hi guys, didn't get a chance to work on it today, sure appreciate all the answers.Son is picking up a new fan tomorrow.I did put a few pics on my album. Not great but maybe your eyes will see something. Thanks again. And yes i'm pretty careful of where we stand when running. Jack
It looks from the picture of the alternator that you are at the end of your travel area . If the belt wasnt on , it looks like you only have a little bit before it goes over center and would loose tention . Get a better pic of that area so I can verify it please .
Hmmm, says they ran it without the fan (and I assume by that he means with the belt back on, but no fan) and it went away. Sounds like a messed up fan to me. unless he meant with no belt at all, in which case that didn't tell him much of anything (except that it wasn't the main bearing that someone suggested, hopefully sarcastically)
56, there is a 1 1/2 left out to the end,i'll get pics tommorow.Hotroddon,no we run it with the belt on,just no fan.Getting a fan tommorow if we can. Thanks agin for looking and trying to help me.I been at this stuff for a long time and have never had this happen. Jack
I had a 87 Ford PU that I removed all the smog from -- one day I got a squeal when goosed -- sounded like an alternator bearing but I come to find out it was a rubber vacuum plug that had developed a split, which when hit at the right RPM vacuum vibrated to squeal like a stuck pig. Probably not your issue, though.
Problem solved! We changed back to the orig. fan.It is a clutch drive,no more chirp. Thanks for all the help
Is it a standard shift? See how much end play in crankshaft when pushing on clutch. May need thrust bearings.
If you have room try running a clutch fan. The flywheel effect of the heavy fan can't speed up as quickly as the engine causing the belt to slip momentarily. I think the fan clutch would slip instead of the belt quieting the chirp. Blue
No it is auto. The clutch fan did the trick.Drove me crazy for 6 months off and on. I wanted to add FIXED to the title ,dont know how. Thanks guys Jack
My 427 Impala use to do that. I tried everything...then I figured it out...it was the rear tires. I put on bigger stickier ones and it stopped.
