My brother and I picked up this 1930 Chevy Coupe from a neighbor for $3500.00 on Sept, 23, 2012. After poking around on it for awhile and realizing that many of the parts where from various years (1929 thru 1931) we decided it was going to get hot rodded. I have attached many photos here of the build that has been taking place on Saturdays since Sept 23rd. You can find many more photos here http://www.deepsand.net/1930chevy

In the process of boxing the frame , we already have a new title (we didnt have any vin or title info to start with) VIN stamped on frame.

Found a Chevy Blazer with a nice 327 with Edelbrock intake manifold and carb for $1000.00. Sold the blazer for $950.00...Motor for $50.00 sounds good to me.

Found a Ford 8" rear end for $125.00 that has the perfect offset....no modification necessary. Well we will be changing the gears.

New Total Cost Involved 4 link suspension with coilovers.

Cab back on the frame....ready for the next step (which was completed this weekend) channeling the cab 3".

We are going to do a small chop. We are concerned about roof height, and would also like to keep it looking like a Chevy.

Man that was a beauty before, I have to say it kinda makes me sad to see it being turned into a rod just because those cars are rare in comparison to the same year fords. But I have to say awesome craftsmanship so far. Are you gonna keep it full fendered?

It is a great looking car in photos, unfortunately there are many hidden issues. We will be going fenderless. And we are full aware that our Grandfather is rolling over in his grave. But we want something unique.

  7. Great job so far! Glad to see another Chevy coming back to life. What condition was all the wood in the car? Good luck with your project.

The wood is so/so...we have allot of work to do to get the doors aligning properly...back of the cab and the rear of the trunk need replaced.

I would run some fenders with that M2 setup. Other than that looks pretty good. How much are you planning on chopping it? Also as far as not having any vin info. The aluminum body tag which is attached to the cowl is your "vin". It will tell you the model, yom, plant location, trim package, etc. This is what you would use to get a title since it was made prior to the vin system. So I am guessing you have a special construction title. Tried to help you with this on your previous thread but it must have gotten banned. I am also doing a 1931' Chevy if you have any ?'s

Please define M2 setup. We will chop it around 2", we haven't fully decided that yet though.

Mustang 2. I chopped mine 3" and it has good proportions (running fenders). I also cut the back window out so it would stay full height and then fabbed it back in after the chop. now the windows are all about the same height all the way around. However, if you are running fenders you could get away with a more drastic chop. Here is probably the best fenderless Chevy around. Just to give you an idea.

I guess I'll be the asshole here...M2 or Mustang II independent front suspension looks terrible on fenderless cars...

We aren't using a mustang 2, I guess ours is a bit similar...but it is a rear steer...total cost involved setup.

Good looking car. I have to agree a dropped axle looks best on a fenderless car. but at the end of the day though, it's your car and you will prolly do it proud.
I had a 29 chevy 3 window that I wanted to do a full fendered gasser style build with it, but it wasn't to be. '
    Have fun with yours.

I see where you are coming from, the dropped axle is much tighter to the frame. The IFS we installed does have a 2" dropped spindle. We really just want something different than all the others.

The most important part to us is keeping it looking like a Chevy, no matter what it takes.

The VIN plate on a 29/30 is located on the passenger side floor still, next to the seat when you open the door. The tag on the firewall just gives you the job number, etc. nothing at all to do with the VIN.

    NICE LOOKING CAR SO FAR!

I have to ask you a favor if it's still possible, would you be able to take some good pictures and measurements of your floor wood and post them up? Getting correct measurements for these early Chevy cars is tough....

Actually the tag on the firewall has all the information needed to figure out your original VIN(it wasn't really a vin in those days)...there is info online but you have to piece it together from a couple sources...it is way more simple than you can imagine..if you need this info I will provide it here..we had this car registered within a couple weeks with the info from the firewall plate...let me know if you need it..

Sure I still have all those pieces , I will get you some info.

I also love to see the old chevys.Great job on the frame and cross member section. I am working on a 1930 chevy 2 door "sedan".I am running fenders on mine and going to drop it as low as I can.

Do you still have the fenders? If so,would you sell them? Mine are rough shape.

You are braver that I am...I couldnt bring myself to go fenderless on my 29 sedan because my fenders were so nice on the car I bought. You should be able to find a buyer for yours here on the Hamb to offset some costs.

My 29 build is about to kick into gear once I move into my new shop in January. I will be watching this one.

Nice work so far, even if I am with the others on the M2 susp;)

  30. The plate on the firewall is actually the Fisher Body build sequence number and also contains body related information such as style year and paint code. The Chevy serial number is on the passenger side floor as stated above . The floor mounted plate is most often missing because it was only tacked to the wood body sill. Some states will use the Fisher number for registration and title and others want the Chevrolet number or engine number. In Connecticut the DMV used the Fisher body number for my 32 because it is riveted to the firewall and less susceptible to tampering.
I'm glad to see another Chevy being saved....Looks like your doing a great job!
