Different White Wall tech question???

I saw the other post about cutting wider whites. It works. I did it on my Hudson. My question is:

Does anyone have any good ideas for redoing worn out white walls. I got a brand new set with my '47 but the whites are ****. They looked dirty so I sprayed Westley's on them. The white pretty much wiped away to a gum wall color. I guess I could just spray paint them but there must be a better solution. I tried to find someone who does vulcanizing locally but no luck.

 

I would try taking a fine grit sandpaper and sanding the top of the white wall litely. That may take the gum color off it!! Nate

 

I'll try it but I think it's gum all the way through. Because the more I clean the less white there is. Ugh.

You could also put portawalls. I have a set of 14 inch for sale if thats the route u might want to take? I dont know what to tell you if it is gum colered all the way thru, i never seen that but i geuss anything can happen!! Nate

 

I've seen it some friends of mine bought some white wall tires like that and the white wall turned to **** the more you washed it they're just cheaply made tires probably thats what those ones my friends bought were. Althought they weren't cheap to purchase.

 

What brand are you two talking about that turned grey after scrubbing? Very interested in knowing the manufacturer/s.

 

Try and call around, look for stuff called Rubber Cleaner? I think, I dunno, we have it at the shop I can tell you better tomorrow, it's basically stuff to clean up tires before you patch them. Also check at your local art supply stuff, they sell it as something called Bestine. If they are dirty gummy, not discolored this stuff does wonders. Way better then the stuff they sell specifiaclly for white walls. That **** you gotta scrub and scrub, this stuff you wipe it on, keep turning the rag, and after a few swipes, it's brand new.

 

i know you guys are gonna go ape **** on this one but you might actually try laquer thinner on a rag and VERY LIGHTLY wipe the whitewall with it.ive done this on quite a few harley whitewall tires,and some "stock" car tires.again,i can't stess VERY LIGHTLY with the rag.try it in a small area,and be carefull not to hit the blackwall,cause you'll get it one the white.i have not tried this on car wide whites,so BE CAREFULL.IT WILL WORK.

 

I wouldnt see a harm with thinner, ive tried it once. I even used wd40 once and it worked pretty good!! Nate

 

I'll second the laquer thinner. I used it many times to clean off road tar and overspray, never seemed to hurt the whitewalls. I have a few '70's cars with that plastic beltline moulding trim ****, and after 20 years the plastic tends to dry out and look dull. If you soak a rag with laquer thinnner, and scrub it, it will actually look like new again. The laquer thinner removes a small layer of plastic, exposing virgin stuff underneath. The same would apply to whitewalls too, I suppose.

Didn't someone a while back mention using 409 or Castrol Super Clean to keep them white?

 

The best thing i've used is a gritty bathroom cleaner & a scouring pad (the type you use on ya pots'n'pans) it works really well & harms nothing, wash off with water.

 

those s.o.s. pads for cleaning your pots and pans,and stainless stuff works mint!!!!!
