Ok I can't think of anything that uses them off the top of my head, so maybe you guys can help me figure this out. I keep seeing a door handle ****on in my head that has the locking mechanism in it (or rather behind it). So ya put the key in the same spot ya push with yer thumb. It's prob'ly a foreign car for all I know. What I want to do is drop the door handles and put the locking ****on where the door key goes now. Kinda like those nifty Lincoln door ****ons but with a lock. Hopefully I'm not just nuts and someone out there knows what the hell I'm talkin' about! Maybe wunna ya had one? Olson --------- please tell me to not buy anymore cars right now
I've seen setups where the lock mechanism work the door latch, so theres no handle, the key just opens the door. But I can't think of a ****on with it made into it.....theres bound to be something though.......
Yeah that's the backup plan if I can't figure out why I think I've seen these. My car has it's lock in a spot I don't mind leavin' it, but the handles are goin' fer sure. Olson
I was looking at a new Alfa the other day (it was parked in front of where I was sitting.....I swear) It had exactly what you described.
Unfortunately, new Alfa are not sold here... I'm sure I saw what you want on a '51 Chevy, so probably '49 through at least '51 has it. Cosmo
I've seen a Truck with the push ****ons off the trunk off the big Audi Sedan ( 5000? )on its doors. Worked good but it looked kinda modern ( part black plastic...), and too big at about 1" diameter. Maybe the push ****ons of the doors off a Renault Le Car could be adapted. ( Chromed metal ) If you can still find one of these things in a junkyard, the parts should be cheap...
HRH told me they were...ready for this....VW! GASP/EEK/ACK/BOO/HISS/etc.! It doesn't bother me...I'm still gonna consider runnin them on the WA-GONE. I think they're from the hood or trunk of the old bugs. Maybe he was mistaken, but that's where I'm gonna start my search.
1971 Panteras have them! Easy to find! Mainly older European cars will have them. A lot of older cars seemed to have this setup for their trunks also. Stu
Both the Isuzu Rodeo and some Subarus use these on the rear hatches. I know that the Rodeo still comes with these on current models. Subarus used to about 10 years ago but it'd be easy enough to check out. Swing by the Subaru dealer. The older ones had two mounting ears on the back that bolted or screwed it in place and were pretty easy to modify for mounting. I don't know how the Isuzu ones mount. (Later that very same day) Checked out a Subaru Forester today. No push ****on but I nknow for sure they used to use them. Then I saw a Blazer, about 3-5 years old ( I don't keep track of these things) and the rear hatch gl*** has a locking push ****on in black. Don't know if they come in stainless or not so hit your local dealer.
52 -59 Chevy or Gmc trucks have locking ****ons in the handle, cheap and plentiful. Hope this is helpful. Jay
Thanks guys...I knew ya'd have a clue. I've had many VW's (most of them Squarebacks but a few watercooled ones too) and I do remember them all having a lockin' ****on. I'll have to check all the suggestions and see what fits right and looks modifiable to how I need it to work. On the right track now THANKS! Olson ----------- speechless...damn!
What I liked about the V-dub rear hatch locks were that they had a little finger loop that you could open the door with and the mechanism was fairly small! What kind of car are you trying this on?? Does it have the press paddle in side of the door? What I used was the push ****on lock off of the trunk of an old Imperial, Most old Dodges and Chryslers had them. I had to cut the lock down and do some filing but it worked great. It had no keys but $20.00 at the locksmith took care of that!
Yeah I won't be able to use that loop here, as you can see now that I went out and took a ****py pic at night (hey it shows what we're talkin' 'bout) with all the paint chips from the kids bikes. These were actually shaved at one point, but no where near done right. So, I popped the bondo outta the holes and put the damn things back on (it's funny *this* car is actually getting more STOCK the longer I own it). However, this isn't actually the car I'm gonna do it to. I've got another one of these on the way, but that one's a hard top (and dark red...for now). So what I need to find is one that fits the diamter of the hole in the trim piece, that doesn't stick out *too damned far*, and that I can hook up to the linkage for the lock *and* the door. Actually, now that I think about it, I need one that doesn't push in without the key being turned (or disengages from the linkage and just doesn't do anything). Hmmm...guess I better start lookin'! Olson
i started doin' the lock mechanism as works for the door about 1987 or so. did lots of them on mini trucks, vw's, lowriders, and yes a few customs to. it works great but get a good quality key made. NOT a cheap copy that WILL break under the stress of using it as a handle for the most part. and even then run a pull cord back up just in case. heavy guage picture hanging wire works great if you can't modify your original rods for the doors to work on the lock tab. now as far as the Lincoln ****ons go. i'm the guy here who deals them. i have talked about making a slightly more sleak version with a lock feature. it raises cost dramaticlly. to the point in fact where it's a good deal cheaper to run the lincoln ****ons and power door locks with really good motors for the locks. working in a car stereo factory for a few years along with stereo/tint stores for a few friends i found you can do lots of crazy **** through a fairly standard alarm system. my daily at the time('94 Civic) was a hifonics factory car. my simple alarm system would: lock/unlock doors, raise/lower windows, pop hood, pop trunk, and if i had had it would have open the sunroof(had the relay but no sunroof). i got all the stuff on that car at cost or free but i think the retail on that system then was around 350. and lots of ****ing wiring. any how back on subject lots of 80s/90s imports had those releases for the trunk. got a import specific junkyard near you? good place to just walk around and dig for stuff for cheap. heres another hint for while your there the rear hatch mechanism on lots of import hatchbacks and wagons make perfect trunk release mechs for old cars. you can usually pull the whole works out and take it with you for 10 bucks or so...ken....
