I just set up my linkage on a pre-69 Muncie - seems to shift fine (still out of car) - cant seem to get the shifter to put the Trans in reverse - used a new shifter kit from summit - universal any ideas - Thanks<O</O
Start by removing the shifter rods from the levers on the trans. Be sure that the 1/2 and 3/4 are centered in neutral. Move the reverse lever and check the rotation of the output shaft while turning the input. I've seen rods not adjusted correctly and failing to engage the reverse gear. You're doing it correctly by fitting the shifter out of the car. Good luck!
There should be a notch in the shifter that takes a 1/4 inch rod, take all your rods off put the 1/4 inch drill bit or rod in the shifter, make sure all levers on the ****** are in neutral.1/2 3/4 the levers go up, reverse hangs down. Now adjust the rods till they easily slide into the levers,if it still won't go into reverse pull the shifter off, the pin that actuates each plate sticks out on the shifter adapter side when it's put in reverse, make sure it's not hitting the adapter, also make sure you don't have to push down on the shifter to get reverse.
Thanks guys - I used the pin - but did ny check to make sure the trans was in neutral -thanks for the help -will try it today
Another thought, be sure to have the trans held stationary when bench-shifting it. I've been building Muncies since the '70's and sometimes when a trans is "floppin' around" it's just hard to slide it into reverse. Back when I first started with them, I pulled a few of them back apart when they wouldn't bench-shift into reverse easily, to find absolutely nothing wrong. You MIGHT just be worrying about nothing.
I agree - I have the eng out so it is bolted to the bell - good point - I could not get it to shift on the bench by it self very well Thanks
Found this on another thread - not my project - but I may aslo have my reverse going to the wrong shifter point -
Something else to check. On some of the old ones,,there was an angle change on the lever for the side arm. I can't remember if it was Muncie or a BW T10 ,,but there was a difference. Also ,,check your shifter levers,,,,sometimes old pieces get mixed together ,,that look very close to correct,,but are sligthly different. just an idea. Tommy
C- man .. If you can't get it dialed in, give me a call.. Been successfully battling shifters for more than 4 decades. Happy to help. Dave 831-262-7294
Safe to ***ume you've tried all gears without the shifter? (Just turning the ****** arms by hand). If that proves OK, then my only other suggestion would be to agree with HRBerny about the 1/4" alignment holes. That is a crucial step in getting a Hurst to work. You are essentially creating the "gate" - the cross over row for the three shifter arms. If even one is not perfectly aligned, you miss the "gate", and it won't go thru. Plus, it helps ***ure that before you attempt to go into reverse, that you are 100% neutral in the 1-2 and 3-4 linkages. Trannies in 2 gears at once do not live long....
Working on this right now. This is the linkage that was on the car as I purchased it. Seems to work just fine. I have rebuilt the trans and it is now going back in. Don't know if the pics are helpful. Obviously the reverse linkage has been modified for some reason.
Been a long time since i worked on a Muncie,,but that first pic does not look right. Looks like the gate is in neutral on the shifter,,,,but the levers on the side cover look out of time. Take another look at the location of the side arms on the cover. Tommy
T 10's had the levers with the angle in the lever where it bolted on, Muncies the slot was straight up and down
Thanks all for all the tips - first Muncie I have ever had or set up - I followed all the tips - biggest tip that I did not know - also make sure you don't have to push down on the shifter to get reverse. works perfect , Thanks Hot Rod also thanks Dave - nice to know your close - thanks for the offer do we know each other Chris
