No degree wheel, no dial indicators in your toolbox, no hex-a-just,no offset bushings,no multikey crank gear for your engine? The hell with them, dont need all that stuff. Have intake manifold off so you can see lifters. Turn crank so that number one and six piston are at top dead center. Install cam and lifters in number one and six . Rotate cam until intake and exhaust lifters on number six are down on heel of cam. Now lifters in number one are up a little because it is on overlap. Now install chain and gears with key out of crank gear and 180 degrees from keyway. Everbody has a straight edge and feeler guage. Check with straight edge across top of lifters on number one and see if lifters are level. If not rotate cam, notice crank does not turn because of no key. If lifters are level cam is straight up, for advance rotate cam until intake lifter is .030" higher than exhaust. This will put right in Mr. Rogers neighborhood. When all set like you want slide key in crank up to gear and mark gear. Local machine shop here gets 10 to 15 bucks to cut new keyway in crank gear. Now your cam is dead nuts on where you want it. Old iron has no after market help for this kind of fine tuning. This is one way to get what you want. Check out where your lifters are even if you degree wheel cams, good backup system.
Your my hero! I can't wait to start working on that engine! I probably won't start until a year or two on it. It was awesome talking to you though, the last time I did! I typed up all my notes if you want to go over them sometime, I could email them to you. -peter
