"altered coupe with a sbc" believe it or not, that's not enough information to get a cl*** designation. Fuel vs gas is the easy part. It's partially the body style, how is it altered, top chop, wheel base alteration etc.... the other half is engine size etc..

What are you thinking about ?

    MODIFIED CATEGORY

This category encomp***es American and foreign coupes, sedans and pickups (with full stock beds), unaltered in height, width or contour, and with all stock panels mounted in original relationship to each other, which have been modified to such an extent as to no longer fit into the production category. Cars generally accepted as sports or Gran Tourissimo coupes are specifically forbidden. A generic requirement for this category is that the car must have been originally produced with suitable seating for four (4) average adult persons.
Within the Modified category, the amount of modification determines the cl***. For example, a Gas Coupe is basically a Production car with an engine swap, an Altered is a Gas Coupe with headlights and grille covered and the engine set back, a Compe***ion Coupe is an Altered with the nose lengthened and streamlined.

    1. Vehicles competing in the Compe***ion Coupe and Modified Sports cl***es must have do***entation showing the stock vehicle BEFORE modification.
    2. It is REQUIRED that vehicles in this category which exceed 200 MPH, or if the existing record is over 200 MPH, must have roof rails.
    3. COMPE***ION COUPE & SEDAN - /BFCC, /FCC, /BGCC, /GCC
    4. Production coupe or sedan body unaltered in width or contour.
    5. Engine cl***es allowed are: AA, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, XF, XO, **F, **O
    6. FUEL ALTERED COUPE - /BFALT, /FALT
    7. GAS ALTERED COUPE - /BGALT, /GALT
    8. This cl*** encomp***es coupe or sedan bodies, 1928 or later, unaltered in height, width, length or contour, mounted in the conventional manner with all panels mounted in the original relationship to each other.
    9. Cars in this cl*** are considered in the Modified Category and should comply with the General Rules of the category
    10. Engine cl***es allowed are: AA, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, XF, XO, **F, **O
    GAS COUPE and SEDAN - /BGC, /GC

    1. This cl*** encomp***es coupes, sedans, and convertibles which must have an engine swap, quickchange rear end, or a non-stock supercharger, any one of which makes the car ineligible for compe***ion in Production cl***. Gas Coupe cl*** includes Camaros, Barracudas, 1958 or later T-Birds, Mustangs, compacts and other cars of this type. 500 must have been produced yearly.
    2. Engines cl***es allowed are: AA, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I,J, XF, XO, **F, **O
    MODIFIED SPORTS - /BFMS, /FMS, /BGMS, /GMS

    1. This cl*** is intended for production sports cars as accepted for GT cl*** which have been modified to such an extent as to make the vehicle illegal for the Production Category. This cl*** is limited to production, a minimum of 500 vehicles of the same model for sale to the general public, sports cars, examples of which include Chevrolet Corvette, Porsche 911, Mazda RX7, and Nissan Z series automobiles.
    2. This cl*** may run Nitrous Oxide, but will be advanced two (2) engine cl***es.
    3. Engine cl***es allowed are: AA, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I

These are some of the cl***es, honestly, there are ton's of qualifiers to determine which cl*** you want to run. You might fit in /BGALT, /GALT. Engine size will be the prefix to the cl*** designation.

In '66, my first year, it would have been a C/Comp Coupe which allows fuel. The big chop makes it a CC instead of an Alt Coupe. Hard to say how fast it would have gone. Depends on how much power the engine made. As well as proper gearing. The real question is how fast can you go in 2013?

your altered coupe may have been in the ?/CC "compe***ion coupe" cl***. CC allowed manufactured bodies, chopped, channeled, and/or bellypanned but not sectioned, streamlining upfront ok, running on fuel.
    around the mid 60's the D/CC record was 192.297 with a 259 Chrysler/Studebaker
the E/CC record was 163.193 with a 260 Falcon powered 34 Ford coupe

your coupe may have been in ?/Alt, "Altered Coupe/Sedan" cl***, tube frames, engine swap, 25% engine setback, top chop, running gas. E/Alt mid 60's record was 152.08, a 300 inch injected Olds in a 54 Stude. Typical speeds thruout the cl***es were 150 to 200mph.

the prefix letter (A/--, F/--) grouped the seperate body styles by cubic inch displacement.

a sbc in an altered coupe should have been running 130 -200mph, engine displacement, blown or unblown, fuel or gas being determining factors.

"Checkerwagons" info shows current cl***ification for B"ville.

In the 60's, there weren't any distinctions in the cl***es between old and new body style.

Some of this is from memory and some from old Hot Rod magazines. It may not be extremely accurate but, it will help with your question.

For the past three years, we have been running at B'ville with a track nose 27 T roadster, 1956 324 Olds motor in C/gas modified roadster, C/GMR and went 166 and having fun!!!!
More fun to come, moving up to more hp. So, the 1956 Olds, 430hp motor now for sale.

Jerry Kugel and Red Holmes ran 167 using an injected 301" SBC on gas in this '34 in 1962.

OK, so here are the Altered records from the 1965 Bonneville Nationals:
A/ALT-208.394, B/ALT-171.608, C/ALT-164.238, D/ALT-174.826, E/ALT-152.058. Not all of these records were set in 1965, records are carried over from past years if new ones are not established in the currant year. Hope this helps, Gary..... p.m. me if you need more info.....
