The 4th Annual Paint n Primer event happened Sunday, oddly enuff, on the 4th of September About 100 or so cars cruised into John Metcalf Park in Fountain, ColoRODO, just south of ColoRODo Springs at the invitation of Dave Pareso, owner of Back Street Kustoms The event has been held in the past at his shops parking lot, for the last three years, but it simply outgrew the facility so the move was made to a gr***y park with a shelter, an ideal place to stay out of the very warm September ColoRODo sun but the parking lot was gravel and a tractor pull was going on just to the south of the lot yet, that didnt make a bit of difference to those that attended cars got dusty but real hot rods get driven and get dirty nothing new here! The morning started off leisurely, but by lunch time, the parking lot was full of hot rods and sleds and most of the participants were enjoying some cold ones under the shelter late morning, the hot dogs were cooking and thanx to several of the gals that came down, potato salad, cole slaw and various other edible goodies were set out for lunch, including dessert. Dave makes sure theres plenty to eat and plenty to drink the event is entirely paid for by Back Street Kustoms as a way to say thanx to his customers and future customers and friends. Not only is the food good, but the door prizes are plentiful again courtesy of Back Street Kustoms a ton of gift certificates went to participants, plenty of T-shirts, several pin-striped panels, some old signs, hand made pillows and a few stainless steel license plate holders went away the Grand Prizes, when everything else was gone, were a full set of whitewall tires and a certificate for a metalflaked top or a set of hot licks (flames) applied by Back Street Kustoms. Believe it or not, out of the 100 or so cars there, Cadillacs made up a good portion of the cars in the lot seems Caddys are hot properties in ColoRODo right now. While some guys are into the long heavy cruisers others are just now getting into hot rods 19 year old Dave Slason build this 27 Roadster Pick-up by himself, starting with a Model A frame donated to him by Dave at Back Street Kustoms the flatty runs open exhaust, a stick shift and very little in the way of seats (a folded up t-shirt), but he was kicking up some dust in the lot showing off. The 56 Plymouth you see in the background is his also, his pal drove it down for him he and his Father put that one together but his Dad had other things to do when it came time to put the RPU together for a youngster, I think he did an amazing job! We did a photo shoot while he as there for one of the magazines and we had to add a few other hot rods to the mix just for grins the Model A five window, with Oldsmobile engine on the left belongs to Roach -- Mike Rocher of Aurora, CO and the blak sedan, with the Mexican blanket top, on the right belongs to Mark Hotz out of Alamosa, CO. The roof was supposed to be done for the event by an upholsterer, but he "ran out of time" so Mark did the next best thing...took the Mexican blanket covered it himself and made it work! Who said you hadda use a blanket on the inside? The whole day went by amazingly fast and thats what happens when you spend time with good friends. By the time 4 PM rolled around, most everyone had had enuff fun in the sun for the day and said their thanks and goodbyes to say a good time was had by all would be very accurate and if some of you ColoRODo guys missed it hmmmmm, too bad. I know there was one HAMBer that was getting his 62 readied for the trip but don't know if he made it or not... More kustoms: Hudson Kustom... '58 Chevy Bel Air '60 Caddy...green is the "new" red! Last but definitely not least, Dave Pareso' chopped '51 Merc... Photos by "Roach"
