ok, here is the deal... I dont have really anything to auction I dont pinstripe or anything like that I'm a sales guy....I have been on here for quite a few years and have seen the power of the HAMB, so let me sell you please on something that is very important to me... I have emailed Ryan and asked for an ok.. but he is a very busy guy and we need to take action ASAP...Many of you know people or have heard of friends and family displaced by the Hurricane.. I would love to go over there to help but cant take off work like many of you... I have a group of about 10 friends that are taking off school and work and making a staright through drive to houston to help out the victims...I would like to take some donations for them to be put in my paypal account and at the end of each week I will cash it out and go buy Walmart gift cards and mail them to my friends to hand out, along with some checks so they can just buy some supplies and go hand them out to people.....here is my plea... there are alot of you on the HAMB... I would like to raise at least $500 by friday... I dont think that is or should be hard to do....I will run this until the 16th of sept and give you a final tally of dollars collected and many thanks...if this isnt for you ok... but please dont post it or tell me what I could be doing instead... I want to see how many people we can help from behind our desktops....if you have family affected by this, I will continue to pray for you everyday.

    Kind Regards,

    Bigdaddy aka John

  2. Johnny...
    you're 20% to your goal.

C'mon fellas...five or five hundred..every little bit goes to help someone in need...the best part about it is that there is no beaureaucratic red tape. ALL of your cash goes straight to a body, person, family in need...

    God Bless.

  3. There are hundreds of these cries for help going around. Most are scams, so I donated directly to the red cross.

BigDaddy might be a cool guy and all, but I would rather be sure that every penny is going to a helping organization. Its a noble cause, but like I said, I want to be sure.

  4. i can guarantee you FOR SURE that john is 100% genuine, honest and on the level... you can be sure that your donation will put valuable goods and cash directly in the hands of a needy person.

    Big D-

I'm sure your intentions are the best, and I admire your friend's willingness to get directly involved, but I keep seeing and hearing that (at this point anyway), they're discouraging "ad hoc" groups from showing up. It's my understanding that the last thing desired is more people not "***ociated" with a recognized group. That just adds to the chaos. Did I miss something?

As far as donations go, it seems that giving cash directly to the Red Crossl/Salvation Army, etc. is what's most appropriate now. At least that's what I continue to get from the media (yeah, I know a greater portion of the donations to them will be eaten up by adminstrative costs, etc.).

Also, in my personal case, the company I work for (Teledyne Technologies) will match any employee donations over $50 - so I pretty much have to stick with that program. It's just too cool a deal.

Don't mean to be negative. Just wondering if things have changed as far as what is being called for. In any case - best of luck.

Stan thanks man... but you can always believe what you hear on the tv and radio... we have no cost.... they are paying for their own everything...gas food water shelter...100% goes to the people. as for your company thats awesome..I'm just trying to get people involved.... I am not a crook... I know who I am. Your company money is also going somewhere.... red cross is good no doubt matter of fact I know that you can donate yourself and they will train you and send you over there with them... but unless someone wants to donate a month of pay for me...I cant do that... so I figured this is second best...

  10. if you dont want to give money to some group of hack do-gooders, then you can help by maybe offering a place to grab a shower, or a couple of hamburgers while these guys are DOING SOMETHING TO HELP.
i'm pretty sure houston isnt the worlds most desireable vacation spot right now.

Hey guys I'd love to donate but I just sent a group of 10 friends who use to live in New Orleans a check for a grand. I'm an unemployed college student, but the way I see it, they need it a lot more than I do. I've also sent clothes and baby food for my buddies son. As far as Red Cross and/or Salvation Army go, I'm not knocking them for what they do in response for getting food, clothes, etc, (neccesities) to the people but when it comes to monetary donations only about 20-30% actually reaches those in need. The rest gets filtered through management. Like I said I'm not trying to sound holier than thou, I'm not, I just wanted to help out my friends. I highly doubt any HAMBer is gonna scam another HAMBer on something like this.

I am amazed at you guys for wanting and helping so much. Wish I was in a better situation to donate myself at this point, but once I am I know how important it is to give back to your brothers, sisters, community, country, and planet what you take. We are so quick to point fingers, and so skeptical to open our hearts and pocketbook. In the past I have lived on ramen noodles for a month and I'm sure I'm not the only one on here that has.

To those that are negative, you are only part of the problem and not part of the cure. Go back to the bingo hall with the other old broads and complain to them. Help your brothers and sisters, I'm sure someone helped you before when you were in need and charity is not in vain. EVER. It is self gratifying yes!. The feeling you get after helping someone or some cause is a great feeling, don't make someone feel guilty for that. I have raised thousands of dollars for cancer foundations in my lifetime and it wasn't because of vanity. It was because I saw the pain it caused someone dear to me, and if I could reduce that pain in another family I have made this world a better place. We the hambers are a community of helping each other out. Ryan has made it to where we can trust each other here, and if someone is not trustworthy here they loose there privleges respectable.

    BD-
Thanks for understanding that my comments were never based on su****ion of your
motives. I'm certain you and your friends aren't crooks. That was never the issue with me.

I worked for several years as a fire and rescue volunteer in my tiny little town, and know that many times "extra" persons on the scene can sometimes be more hinderance than help in some situations. And, of course, that's what I had been hearing on TV.

Interesting deal on the tube last night though. An interview with some young guys who took a notion to get down where the action was and see what they could get accomplished. They faked some press credentials and proceeded to drive their compact car right into the fray - apparently having little or no trouble crossing the "security" lines manned by state guardsmen.

Anyways - they reported making multiple trips, each time ferrying locals out of the area to a place of refuge. It made me think that perhaps I had indeed fallen for the "company line" from the goverment and media folks. Incedentally, they also reported (and had video of) seeing dozens and dozens of empty schoolbusses heading AWAY from the disaster area. Very strange!

Maybe your guys can do some good. I sure hope so. Thanks to all of you for your time and effort. I'll get a few bucks off to you ASAP.

Listen guy... its a group of guys and girls from a local college here in Orange County... that is teaming up with a church in houston...I didnt want to say church on the HAMB cause lord knows the rash you catch and not to mention, I follow the rules....The money collected will be sent to the church along with the giftcards... they went out to find and organization to work with thats not the red cross not the salvation army.. and that cant directly get to the people...So if you want to ridicule me...or talk about my intentions please feel free to IM me and I will send you my phone number...The reason why I put the 16th if so I could close it out and count all the money....but thanks for your concern man!!!!

Due to family issues, I don't have room to board anyone nor do I have a ton of extra cash (the firefighters were collecting donations in boots here - gave them the cash I had on me @ the time), but I do have gently used (and CLEAN) 4T/ 5T clothes and shoes. My daughter is donating some of her "babies" (stuffed animals). Should I mail the stuff directly tothe Ministry? I do have 2 addresses of smaller towns in Mississippi and LA that requested help since the Red Cross hasn't been there yet.

That is exactly what I wanted to hear!! You DO have a plan! The only reason I kept being skeptical is because you didn't offer any real plan upfront. There's nothing wrong with the "Church" word. Churches are about the only way ANYTHING gets done in this country! Good for you guys then. You say you got $200 so far and you need a total of $500 by Friday? OK. I'm in for the remaining $300. Where do I send it? Larry

Brock. I'll have my wife go down and put some money in her PayPal account when she gets home this afternoon. I don't know how to do it. And BTW, I wasn't trying to insinuate that you were doing anything under-handed. I just want to know the whole story when I give out money. :D
