Heres a few ideas for paint. Remeber, the interior is red or else I most likely would not go with red wheels. Maybe some hubcaps? I have the originals in perfect cond.

Those Mercs are pretty cool. I would take the money you were planning to use on paint and start with some wheels instead. Reverse, Raders, or Supremes would look great, stance & the right wheels are imo 99% of the look. Otherwise I think those sides just begs for a good panel paint...:D

  4. Cool body style...it's lookin good! I agree with epinut...slap some chrome wheels on it instead of painted wheels. I think I wold leave the flames or scallops off, too. The color combo is cool...maybe red, chunk flake roof? Is the body white or silver? I think a light dusting of HOK White Pearl Ice over the body color would look cooler than flames or scallops. My .02¢

  5. I've a real soft spot for these cars as my Dad had one in 1968. I owned a 4 door Marauder that I sold to my younger brother. Here's his website with pics.

    http://home.cogeco.ca/~ironcow/b%26b.htm

My other younger brother has a '64 Parklane 4 door breezeway I'm going to nab from him when he loses his storage and needs rent money( I'm such a bastard!;) )

I've never seen one of these "customed" except for the one Barris did in '64 so I'm looking forward to seeing your car when your finished. Stu

  6. I agree. Start with the wheel you want and that'll set the tone for the rest. In my mind's eye I see a Watson style panel job with a big flake roof. Orange and copper panels with black striping and a silver roof. But then again, I'm stange.

But you gotta start with the wheels, they'll make or break the look.

  7. Hey Monster...no wonder everyone thinks mine has stock interior....dodododododododo...a little twilight zonish if ya ask me. :):)
    BTW sure i'm biased but hey....nice car !! :)
As far as the reverse wheels go...i've got 14x7 reverse on mine (stock hieght)
the rears are a pube hair away from the inners..3 people and they rub and the fronts scrub the fenders on tight turn...so if ya go reverse dont go that wide!
Also have a set of 14x8 standard offset TruSpokes for it they look pretty bitchin! :)
AS for colour i'm gonna suggest bright freekin red..with red flake roof....
    ...seeexxxyyy ! :)

  8. I was thinkin about your car...if you wanted to do the flames or scallops, do them in that panel, but do them in in a pearl or something subtle and "ghost-like". Know what I mean? I think it's a smooth lookin car that doesn't need much to make it look REALLY smooth. Keep us posted!

P.S. OldcarMike...as cool as that combo sounds, he can't really work with it because his interior is red. I have the same problem with my ride since the interior is kind of an odd golden-tan color...it kind of limits what will look good on the exterior.

Before I scolled down to the second post I thought red wheels would be a cheap but effective addition.....and there they were. Good idea.

Just put some '57 Imperial caps on it and it's done. Doesn't need more red I don't think. Maybe a light metallic grey-green color on the body, with the rim edge and cap center body color.

I'd say screw the repaint all together, I like the baked-out original paint that's on it. Put some Astro's on there and you're done.

Sweet ride. In the side shot it almost looks like the roof is white. I agree that the baked paint looks great (some just don't), but I see a white flaked roof and maybe some '60 Desoto caps on it.

But if ya can't make up yer mind I'll be glad to take it from ya! :D

Thanks for all the nice replies, and I think I will look into some 'Milners' (thats what we call the chrome reversed wheels)

As far as caps, I do have some that came with the car. Im not sure about them tho. I personally dont think they look cool enough.

Sure, they were a factory option and theyre original, but I think Id run steel rims before I ran these.

And paint other than cream, white, silver or black, its hard to put to a car with red interior like barnett said. Course Im totally open to suggestions.

And I feel youre right about not needing much to be smooth and ghost flames/scallops may be a sweet idea! :)

    Ill keep you guys posted

how did you lower it? i lowered my 62 by cutting some coils off, but the alignment suffered severly from it.

  16. Monster, that is a very cool car! Good luck with it.

The pic below doesn't mean nothing except it's a very clean resto of a 4dr. same model and year.

Yea, I just cut a full one and a half coils off the front with 2" lowering blocks on the back.

my alignment doesnt seem to have any issues, but then I havent driven it a bunch, mainly just working on it

You gotta find the 64 spinner caps, I had them on my 64 marauder, thoes and redlines are hot, I guess you need to decide which way your going with it, scallops and such, or take it more mid 60s pro street style. Good luck

I tried finding the spinner caps for that and other years, and all im getting are caps with fake knock offs.

Is that what youre talking about? I had in mind a flipper single bar cap, but maybe im thinking of a different style.

Do you have a pic? does anyone have pics of the caps that were mentioned in the past posts?

Like the 60 Desoto or the 57 Imperial caps?

    Thanks

(Just found some 54 imperial caps on ebay, those are pretty sweet :) )

    Hey squablow,

I may be slow or out of the loop, but what do the Astro caps look like. Is that a slang name for the caps you had in mind, cause I cant find them on any search.

    Thanks

So, I just finished the trunk. Rust morted it all and got it to steel. Primered it all and need to order the rubber and a key assembly, or elec solinoid, not sure yet.

I'll carpet the whole thing in red to match. Im thinking of boxing it in, like the photoshoped version there Ive done.

Heres my steering wheel and the shape its in. Its still in one piece, but cracked pretty bad. You can also see where its seperated along the ring from shrinking.

Painted the air cleaner creame and metalic dark red to get an idea of the color combo. I think it looks pretty sweet, what do you think?

And the engine bay, where Ive been spending most of my time, however, it doesnt show much, haha

  22. Het Monster..a quick easy thing to trick the dash up...the top shroud over the gas and other gauges is actually in a primer of sorts ,under that is chrome plating...instant sha bling!!:)
And just so ya know...the dash cluster in most cars were black digits on a silver face but the wagons were blackface with white digits.
I still cant believe yours has the same seat covers...tooo funny !

    Hey Monster,

Looks like I have been most places you have, trunk floor (some thoughtful previous owner had used epoxy resin to "fix" the floor support peice seen though the hole), engine bay (some swap-meet covers and black/gold paint), dodgy steering wheel (nothing done yet)...

I've just replaced the UJ's in the driveshaft, nice dirty job. I haven't taken on the lowering, disc brakes or any other customisation yet, I'm trying to put those resources into my project car.

The Merc is a nice summer cruiser though. I'm sure you'll enjoy yours when its done.

    Trev.

Yea Rev, I know about the same interior. I looked at that pic and said, hey, i never took one at that angle! haahaa

And about the extra bling, thats an awesome tip, but Im not sure if i can handle any more chrome!

Im not use to so much chrome on the dash cluster and steering wheel and clear ring on the wheel. When I drive it with any sun, I have to wear shades.

I mean, when I turn the wheel, the headliner looks like i have some damn disco ball spinnin for god sakes! haha

  25. I know what ya mean...people are always asking me if it came that way stock :)
And i just found a set of stainless steel fender skirts at a swap....almost too cool to paint ! :)
