Ouch just went to a highly recommended upholstery guy quoted me $3500-3700 for headliner, carpet, door & kick panels. Cloth or Vinyl two tone pipping etc. Another $975 for the seats. Almost what I paid for paint! 1948 M5 truck
Upholstery work is pretty labor intensive and good material isn't cheap, so that might be reasonable. Still, I would shop around just to see. I understand a lot of former across the border upholstery guys are now setup in Ca and Tx, so you might find one of them who does good work somewhat cheaper. Don
That's what happen to me,sticker shock big time, but I still think in the 195o and 60's,so I just did it my self; http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=604077
I haven't had anything done for awhile but a friend was just quoted the same amount more or less for his 51 Ford 2 dr by one of the best shops here.
Nothing is cheap anymore. That said, it does sound a bit expensive for a truck with only one seat, no trunk, minimal headliner. I would get a few additional estimates from others before I committed to him. With some of these guys you pay a premium for their reputation.
Thats' not cheap but probably not outragous. Is it a simple design you are going for or something more involved like rolled pleats? It there an existing interior that he is replacing or does he have to do everything from ****ch like build door panels etc. As Don mentioned upholstery work can be very labour intensive. I am in the process of trying to do my own and it is a huge amount of work mine is also a truck.
Price doesn't sound out of line, depending on what he has to do for a headliner The headliner can be a lot of work if he has to build something to fasten it to.
I paid $400 for white tuck and roll for my front seat, probably going to be another $400 for the back, and he quoted about $3,000 for the rest of the car. But it this guy does beautiful work, so it made me flinch, but I couldn't argue.
Sounds reasonable here--friend just had a 40 cpe done--leather,square weave, french seams, etc, etc, including truck--top end job with dynamat as well--$8K Have seem similar jobs done in this area for much more-have seen others that were presentable for a little less but the detail wasn't quite there if you looked close.
Nothing ruins a car more than a ****ty looking interior, pleats that don't line up, crooked headliner seams..... Pay the money and get a job you can proud of.
Top end interior guys in Denver get 10-12 grand...going rate for a good complete interior is 3 Grand to 5 Grand, so that price is not far out of line... R-
Had this done in 2011..hauled him the bare car ...Had no seat, bare floor,no kickpanels,etc...he made everything, covered the console, hid the hinges behind panels, made the p/brake boot, doorpanels ..Shop furnished everything...$3500 I am very pleased with the work...had actually figured/budgeted around $5000
Isn't everything in CA more expensive these days? Sounds like a very fair price for quality work. Sometimes you have to pay for that kind of quality, but in the end a quality job will LAST A LONG TIME! KK
You guys are getting off easy. I paid North of $20, 000 for mine. I'm happy with it and the workmanship was/is outstanding.
Or, you could do what I have had some Hot rodders do concerning paint, get a quote for a simple job , keep adding work to the job,by being super fussy on thier pride and joy, as we go along and then only expect to pay the origonal. Worked for them!!!
M5 is a small truck, one seat. I would look around. You interior should be more in line with Fuzzy Knight. Unless you are looking for something more. Two tone shouldn't matter too much.
A good friend of mine does upholstery work and that's exactly what they do to him, all the time I keep telling him once they add on stop, explain how much more it's going to be and then listen to the rest of the story. He keeps telling me he's going to but this has been going on for ten years.
upholstery and gl*** are usually marked up 100% to cover the installers *** in case something goes wrong, at least that was how they did it 40 years ago.
Yep, that's called scope creep and I deal with it all the time in another line of work. The way to handle it is, as soon as they bring it up you need to tell them that what they are wanting is beyond the scope of the original quote but you could update the quote to include what else they want for X amount more. If everybody is clear then neither party has a legitimate complaint about price. If it's too much, don't do it. That's the beauty of a free market system.
Good, quality work is not cheap, nor should it be. Just the same....I bought a commercial machine and I'm teaching myself to do my own upholstery work. Lots more satisfaction that way and If I don't like the way it looks I can complain all day to the mirror In '05 I paid 2200.00 for the interior in my A sedan. Nice work by a local guy and I was very happy with the price, which was a bargain as far as I was concerned, but those days are long gone. The same job would now cost me 8,000.00 or 10,000.00 easy, maybe more.
I'm sure it's nice, but damn! Is it made from the scrotums of arctic snow monkeys or what? Definitely out of my league.
I had a guy at Goodguys quote me $10,000 for an interior for my 47 tudor. I looked at him and said, "So what you're telling me is you don't really want the job, right?" I didn't spend that much for the car!! And I really don't see the need for the scrotums of arctic snow monkeys, Naugahyde skins will do just fine, thank you.
My 30 Roadster pickup cost me 11k, interior using Ultra Leather, (fancy words for fake),, and the top using a mercedes material. I supplied the seat, and made the door, kick and rear 1/4 panels...expensive, But it came out great.
