White Headers?

What coating do yal use on your headers? I was thinking of using vht white, but most vht shit burns off kinda quick.

VHT Hi-Temp is good stuff. BUT... you have to follow the instructions WORD FOR WORD! I'm running satin black on my T and so far (about 2 months and daily driving) they look sweet. I had a small spot flake where I must have touched them before paint, but I just resprayed that spot in a light fog.

Also, white on a car that gets regular use, may be a dead end.

 

VHT will last a season, then brown like most will at some stage. If your only running short pipes easy enough to touch up. Done it myself and okay but not brilliant, ended up wrapping them and they looked heaps better.

 

The white header paint works well if applied right like fred said. But it marks easily and doesn't clean easy. So for instance if you are working on your car and your dirty hand hits it or your tools bump it there will be marks that can only really be removed by touching the paint up.

There is also some good flat whites in the ceramic coating, find a powdercoater that does hi-temp ceramic and see what they can do for you, that is if you don't mind spending a little more.

Maybe try the paint and if it doesn't work for you get them coated...

 

I used it back in the late 60's early 70's and it held up pretty good!

 

I used the vht with good results. recoat every few years. following the directions is crucial

 

Ceramic coating lasted about three years for me and I drove alot. I've also used the vht and that lasted about a year and I just recoated the headers when they got crappy. Cool cars have white pipes so you just have to deal with it.

 

Use VHT, you do need to be careful around them & recoat depending on the abuse they get. No discoloration on mine.

 

These were aluminized in the seventies. The VHT paint was good for touch ups. I think that there are some new alternatives now but this was state of the art back then. It's rough to the touch but it stays put much better than paint. We had a local hotrod shop that used to do it. It's really not a cosmetic coating but it works like a charm and not nearly as expensive at least back then.

 

I ceramic Hi temp coated the split headers on my 292 in 2000. After over 25,000 miles and 12 years, they still look like new! Due to the rough casting on these headers, the coater put 2 coatings on. Believe me those things do get hot as I accidently touched one while cleaning off the parts under the hood. The blister lasted 2 weeks and I haven't done it since.

 

All ceramic coatings aren't the same. The good ones are durable, but are fairly easily damaged.

 

I use to make headers back in the 70's -90's, and that's what we used if the customer was willing to pay for it.I even had a customer sand and polish them looked pretty good, because as you said they were like 36 grit sandpaper but they sure did last and had a nice white to them.

 

VHT and you can't run them in the rain

A few years back I had Embee coatings in CA coat a set in white.... never ran em, sat on the shelf for 3 months... pulled em out and they had started pitting. With Jet Hots warranty it would be hard to go anywhere else.

Has anybody done the Jet Hot White yet?

 

Someone (cant remember who)on the HAMB suggested after shooting the White VHT to then shoot with the Clear VHT header paint (light coat)over the top so that dirty fingerprints etc cold be wiped off,as the clear acts as a barrier -I remember that idea as it sounded very smart.

Yes, however; it is on my nostalgic drag car, supercharged on race gas.....

They gave me my money back, as it did not hold up... I am now back to VHT white paint.... All depends on your exhaust temp's !!!

 

I made these. Tri Y which was considered passe at the time.

 

I never spent much time on Tri Ys, always wanted to since (I am pretty sure it was Dougs that did a lot with them in the 70's) the 70's. Just was a hard sell. A buddy of mine had them on his 55 back in 73-74 I think.

 

Gotta' agree with the aluminizing. I had it done to my headers, and they stayed a whitish color for as long as I owned my car. Any oily fingerprints would burn away clean.

 

I've done VHT white - but you needed to recoat often. Talked to my high temp coater - he can do white, or - the silver/ aluminize stuff goes on white - they have to buff it to make it silver - so he suggested not buffing it. I looked at some headers before buffing and they looked pretty good. Never went much further - sold the car !

 

I have used Embee Performance in Santa Ana Ca for white a few times with very good results, including the Woodyz Hot Rods '57 Chevy Gasser that has been in a few magazines lately.

We, Doug's, still make a lot of Tri Y headers (and in our Patriot brand as well) and recently I have been doing a newer variation in the R&D shop that we are calling a 4-2-1 to distinguish the longer primary tubes compared to traditional Tri Y's. The 4-2-1 style has become pretty standard in NASCAR among other places

 

I went to Jet Hot Site and did not see White anywhere. I know that a few companies offer an aluminized coating that is rough textured and is white looking until you scrap it or rub it then the alumin color comes through. No body that I know of offers a true White Coating "yet"' as they have found it just does not hold up under high heat. Just me two cents worth...Was looking for white for awhile but decided to just go with the old standby silver from Jet Hot for my Gasser's Headers! UGH!!!

 

Yeah, it shows a picture of a header that appears to be white, but no listing for white seems to exist.
