safe purchase

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by spillaneswillys, Jan 4, 2013.

  1. Hi, I am looking at purchasing a vehicle on the HAMB that is 1000 miles away. Is there a safe, honest way for buyer and seller to complete the purchase?
    thanks,
    Joe

This is a loaded question with a lot of variables.
First ensure the seller is not on the bad sellers list put together by Ryan. It is in the cl***ified section towards the bottom.
2nd, have a local HAMBer put eyes on it for you. Ask if they will take pictures and even film it and send you the info. Give the guy $100 or whatever you work out with them. Its worth it.

When I sold my car on the HAMB to a HAMBer in Iowa, this is what he did and I feel that he felt much better about the whole deal.

I hope this helps at least a little.

Of course there is. In the days before the internet, the buyer would send the money to the seller and the seller would send the vehicle to the buyer. Sometimes there was dishonesty but often there wasn't.

How do you guarantee YOUR transaction will be safe and honest? Go there in person. Anything less involves risk and if there is one thing we have all learned in the past few years, it's that any risk is completely unacceptable.

If its listed on the HAMB you should be able to find a member close to ck it out.

there is no way to buy a car without looking at it that would be fool proof.

Let's not overlook the fact that sometimes you can buy a car and still get screwed even when you did look at it first.

Where is it? Maybe someone close by would go look and get you pictures and feedback. Talk to them on the phone while they are there and ask questions so the person can look for your answers. Otherwise I would plan a road trip with a trailer.

Get someone to look at it, if you can't get a HAMB'er to look it, get an appraiser
to go look at it and send you the appraisal.
The appraisal should include pictures of each panel and a description of each panel
and the general condition of everything.
    Should only cost $100 - $150
I've done this in the past with good results
Even had one appraiser call me and tell me to run away from a purchase
I sold a car to an Australian, he had a local guy from a different forum come check
out the car, the biggest worry the Australian had was that the car even existed.
Bank transfer is the safest way to send the money
    NO Western Union or Moneygrams
Make sure the guy sends you a copy of the ***le in his name and it matches the
    name on the bank account
