Guys, I'm installing an A518 trans in my 56 Fury, and I need the mechanical output for my speedo AND a vss signal for the electronic shifter....the 518 speedo output can be either mechanical or vss---I need both. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

I've seen a mechanical VSS signal generator in one of the street rod mags. But I don't know if the thing goes inline on the speedo cable or goes instead of the speedo cable.

Other option is convert speedo to use a VSS signal.

I run an A518 in my '66 Fury behind a 426 Hemi. You're in luck.....the factory used a dual-outlet transmission extension housing in the transition years between mechanical and electronic speedo's. I have one in my car - I use the mechanical the to drive the speedo and the VSS to feed the PCM which in turn controls the 4th gear and OD.

Call a transmission core parts seller and they should be able to locate one.

  4. There's a sensor made for guys putting a TBI Chevy motor in a Jaguar to take the place of the sensor used in certain mechanical speedometer 700R4 vehicles. Maybe that would work?

I'll check my trans---I may already have the right extension housing. My trans is a 46RE out of a '95 Dodge B van. My trans has a vss driven by the tail shaft gear right now; looks like they just plugged a vss into the old cable-driven speedo hole. Thanks for all the help and info.

I ordered the tail housing; my trans has the other hole where I ***ume the vss goes, but it wasn't threaded. Thanks again for the help.

Tommy...are you sure you have a 46RE? A '95 could have a 46RH, which is hydraulically controlled. Much better trans for a hot rod.

I do indeed have a 46RH. There are more connectors near the back on a 46RE.
