i think he means which era, zz top being representative of the seventies rock scene?

there is a pretty good amount of cool fifties rock, gene vincent, link wray, even some of the early elvis stuff, and that is just white rock...

the seventies requires a little more digging to find the gold, in my opinion, but there is good stuff there too. tom waits, for example, blows my ****ing hair back.

i mostly just listen to bop and cal cool and avoid the issue completely.

  7. Ah, Blue Valentine.... what more needs to be said?

I really don't think Greywolf knows what he means. If he does, he wasn't very clear about it.

Yes, the 70's were a turbulent musical time, but some fantastic music came out of that era. The Osmonds, the Carpenters, The Bay City Rollers.... Hahahahahaha!!! :D

Really, let's think - 10cc, ZZ Top, Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, Steely Dan, Roxy Music (late 70's), the Ramones, Dire Straits, oh the list goes on and on....

BTW -Favorite Tom Waits song - Frank's Wild Years - "...never could stand that dog."

When I was in the 4th grade, I got my first ROCK N ROLL c***ette tape. Up till that point, all my parents would get me was old worn out country tapes. This must have been around '85. That first tape was ZZ top's AFTERBURNER. I remember putting that in and when those first guitar licks hit my ears, my legs got weak. Literally, I got all funny feeling....I got a buzz. I'll never forget that.

Greywolf, I have no idea what you are asking.

Are you are asking what the "right" kind of music is....

Personally, I've been listening to a lot of "gansta rap" type junk. Real nasty stupid garbage. Real loud and ALL NIGHT while I put together my '48 Willys JEEP truck hot rod. WRONG music, WRONG year Willys, WRONG haircut, WRONG clothes.....I don't give a ****. Life is good.

Doo wop is the right music in my mind. Rockabilly is great too, but there have been bands playing it and different genres based in rockabilly around since it's creation. Doo wop only enjoyed real popularity in the 50s and early 60's, and there are only a select few groups keeping the tradition of vocal group harmony alive today. There is no genre of music more true to the era than doo wop. Listen to the Jesters, the Channels, the Cl***ics, Moonglows, Nutmegs, Five Satins, the Platters and the Jive five and you'll see what I mean.

Thanks to the Simpsons, when someone mentions ZZ Top, I think of orthodox Hebrews.

Huey Lewis and the News was the last attempt at Do Wop in the 80's in my mind... that said, Bill Kirtchin is still the rockabilly man, and the TwangBangers tour/live CD ROCKED

Billy Joel also sang "For the Longest Time", though I don't know when that was released, probably in the 80's sometime.

Rockabilly is a necessary ingredient in my musical diet, and a steady stream of Cash, Hank Sr., Social D, Tiger Army, Rev. Horton Heat can be heard while wrechin during the day. But doo wop still does it for me

  20. Music's about personal taste. Me, I like to have some Skynyrd or '70's Bob Seger cranked up.. although I've been known to listen to everything from Hank Sr. to Hank Jr. to Metallica or AC/DC and Chuck Berry or Buddy Holly right up to 3 Doors Down.

But hell, listen to what you like... although if it's the 1910 Fruitgum Co. or Britney Spears, you might not want to tell your friends about it. It's just like what car you build - it's about what you like, not what's cool at the moment, or we'd be discussing tuners or how to put 22's on your '78 Caprice 4-door.

Then again, those things may never be cool... I don't really pay attention.

Word up my brutha...or should I say, "that is a great recommendation on your stand of superior artists of the 20th century"..............Anyway Cash is the best no matter WHEN he was recording, it always came from his heart. (Sounds best on vinyl though)

  24. Johnny Cash is the King!
My other choices pretty much reflect what everyone else is digging. I will add to that... Miles Davis, Louis Jordan, Louis Prima, Lefty Frizzell, Emmylou Harris, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Texas *******s, Count Basie, Tower of Power, Elvis Costello, Willie Dixon, and another vote for Hank Snr.

  27. I think that all three members of ZZ Top are in their 50's... but I don't think their age should be up for debate.:D

Here's one 70's song you won't be able to get out of your head unless you use an ice pick, Sweet - Little Willie
