If I am not mistaken, the flamed Deuce roadster was owned by Bob Magane at the time. This turned out to be the Bob Schaeneman Roadster, which was restored by Jim Lowery (Lowery Auto Restoration) and later shown at Pebble Beach.
    Little history on the car.
The '32 was a former Stockton, CA roadster originally rodded by John Erracalde in '38-'39. It set a 128.57 mph cl*** record at El Mirage dry lake in '52. It has an Auburn dash panel, four-spoke Bell steering wheel, bobbed rear fenders, and is most distinguished by its unusual chopped '29 Chrysler split windshield. Today it is restored to its original 1952 configuration.

Good spot Baron. I didn't notice the windshield. Here it is after Jim Lowery put it back to 1952, at Pebble Beach

. I don't remember Paul owning the Merc, we were neighbors on Lynn Street. At one time Paul, Gil and I all owned 63 SS Chevys. I was in the garage with John, **** and Frank, I was doing a Model A coupe. If you guys remember, John and Christy were having their own little war on who could build the lowest car, John won. Today I compare John with Chip Foose, he could draw anything, build anything, but had his inner problems. I currently drive a 86 Corvette with a 4-3 trans. Ain't nothing new. John, back in 1960, built a I believe a 50 or so Chevy with a Olds engine with a 46 Ford overdrive trans. He put in a electric device so he could shift the car 6 times, once in first then overdrive, then second, then overdrive and so on. He was far ahead of his time. John had many ideas, but messed up just as much. Frank and I were close friends, doubled at our senior prom, ended up at Nahant beach with our dates, won't forget that night. **** and I had many great times, he was a hell of a guy, haven't heard his name for quite some time. At one time he owned "Big Boys Toy" that I photographed for Street Rodder Magazine. I remember the time in Salem the cops busted us for working on our cars on Sunday. They thought we had a business, took us to court. Franks cousin was a lawyer, told the judge in front of everyone he had seen him working on his boat at a local yacht club, The judge threw out the case, told the cops to find someone else to go after and leave these young men alone, laughed all the way out of court. Those sure were great times, I could go on for hours. Great bunch of guys back in those days. I'll dig up some pictures of some of those cars and some stuff I built later. Still a Goodguys Rep here in SC. Would love to hear from some of the other "older" guys.

this pic reminds me of the type of model cars I built back in the early to mid seventies. GOD I love roadsters.

  12. THANKS for the "older" moniker Stu!:D
Ray Smith here.Glad to have you aboard and I know you can contribute some stories.
John was indeed a visionary but sadly a very poor businessman. The Maco;the scale 1/4 mile dragstrip;all great ideas that should nave made him a millionaire.I was proud to call him a good friend.
Seem to remember you doing some crazy stuff yourself.Something about a 52-53 Ford with 2x4's wedged between the axle and rhe frame to jack it up like a race car? That maroon retractable was still one of the prettiest customs I've ever seen.
I remember John's Olds powered Chevy;that was the one they were using to tow the 40 sedan(I think)to Connecticut to the Autorama and the hitch let go and the only thing holding the trailer on was the safety chains and they were doing about 80 mph when it happened.
Just spoke with **** a couple weeks ago;some friend of his was trying to locate the Carroll Bros. L'il Moose. He sold the shop and has been out of cars since he sold Big Boy's Toy in 1979. Deals in antiques now mostly.
Sad that we're losing a lot of of the old guys of late. That's why Ken Frederick and don Cavanaugh want to put this reunion thing together. Are you up for it? Could be interesting.
Anyhow I wasn't sure what Pronco had;was it a 50 Ford I was think of? The memory isn't what it used to be;too much wild Turkey and lacquer fumes.:D
Give me a call some time.

Great pics rbantique. The 1930 Red Sport Coupe on page 3 was mine. I lived in Danvers, Ma. and bought it off a fellow named **** Stewart (Stuart??) from Ipswich in 1966. I found out later from Kelsey Martin that he had painted the car. I sold it in 1985 to D.Innis in Danvers and I believe Christy from Middleton did the frame over. Last I heard the car was in Florida with the previous owners children. Thanks for the great pics.

It's a small world... I think this is the sport coupe I bought from Christy
several years ago ( see post 103)..He had bought it from Innis and had put over 100,000 on it. It rode like a baby carraige !!!! I kept it a while and traded it along with a 34 Ford roadster for 12 acres with frontage on the Great Works River here in South Berwick. It has since gone to Don's father in law in the Well ME area and he has been driving it everywhere since. It was built to last !!!

Thanks for the update rbantique. I lost touch with it when Donny p***ed. That's my old car, hope it's still around. I drive the one pictured in my Avatar now, had it since "96" and it lives in Florida with us. Likes the climate better.....:)

Hey rbantique, I posted some pics under the ***le More Steamer trunk from Hell pics on the forum. If you check it out you'll see the sport coupe in a few of them from when I used to go down to Saugus on Sunday mornings for Rod runs. Enjoy.

Maltagliotti,Jimmy. bad *** car for many years. Now a little more reserved but still just as nice. Same lead in it from when it was chopped and the fenders slightly worked in the early 60s.

  30. One of the nicest looking Deuces I've ever seen.I wish I could post pictures here still;have a pic of that car in gray primer taken(I think)at one of the Sturbridge Village runs in the late 60's or early 70's.
