QUOTE=HELLMET]looking into moving there from so cal i have a friend that lives in phulger ville and loves it i would be bringing my 29 roadster with me. looking to move on the outskirts like phulger ville need a better life for me and my family . billy[/QUOTE] We did it and love it. I would be the last person to ask about where to go to have a social life, but I hear that there is a lot to do here! J/k Whats cool is that places like Pflugerville and Round Rock and even Cedar Park are like living in Orange and hanging out in Huntington. If you want a better life and want great schools, look into Round Rock or Cedar Park. Im sure Pflugerville is a fine area in most spots, but I personally just dont like it there. Property taxes are higher than what we were (are) paying in SoCal, but the home prices are that much more affordable. My home in OC would be around $800k and I bought for $158k. I learned that Austin is what you make it. It can be the most boring town or it can be the best, depending on you. My family and I have made it a goal this summer to try something new every weekend in and around Austin, and we havent even come close to being done. The car "scene" isnt what it is in SoCal based on size, but then again SoCal is 75% tough guy/moron vatobilly attitude. To me the scene here is better based on quality. The thing to remember that took me over a year is that this isnt California. Things are done differently than what I was use to because it is different! This December I will have been here 2 years and we cant imagine leaving. There are times though I get homesick for the beach or mountains or no humidity, but that is what vacations are for. I highly suggest taking a trip out here, get acquainted with the area (as much as possible) then make your decision on home, job, etc. Best of luck, keep me posted man.
I've been here over a year. I moved from Sacramento and seems like more and more HAMBers moving to Austin. What Kustom55 said is very true, he doesn't have a life . Kidding. But yea what he said about it not being CA is true in good ways. I love it here. Its affordable (compared to CA) The car guys here are great. My wife doesn't ever want to move back to CA. The Leander School District is one of the best in the state. Let me know if I can help ya in any way. speedy
Billy, I've lived here my whole life and still love it. There is no where else that is the same. It's got it's own culture and the vibe is great. It can take a bit of time to get in the flow here, but once you do there is nothing like it. I'm familiar with all areas of Austin and surrounding, if you have any questions or just want to chat about it, PM me and I'll shoot you my phone #. The hot rod scene is getting better all the time. If you come to scope it out I'm happy to show you around. Schools are great for the kiddos, Bars, bands, and restaurants are great for you. Let me know if I can be of any help. -John
Looking for a good area to live close to downtown, but far enough away that you can still have a little land for a good price? Come to beautiful Dripping Springs, Texas baby... Marcie and I moved in a few weeks ago and absolutely love it so far. I'm 20 minutes away from work and downtown, but have a Texas hill country view. Can't beat that shit with a stick man!
Billy We're from McAllen, TX - about a 5 1/2 hour drive from Austin, conservatively speaking. If you like the rodder scene you're coming to a great location. Without even trying on one weekend, I learned about a rod get-together in Roundrock (a suburb) that was pretty cool. I think it was at a Harley Dealer's parking lot and is probably a weekly/monthly event. Let me also refer you to another cool event - the Lone Star Roundup! This is a yearly event that has been a sensation. I'm not kiddin either. About 8-9 of us drove our cars to the event this year (April 1st) and we had a blast. It is sponsored by several well known R&C Co's and is spearheaded by Steve at the Continental Club - Kontinentals Car Club off of Congress Ave. Several R&C magazines featured the event. Take a look. As you know, I am from Texas and am very partial to our state. It seems most of us appreciate the quality of life, which by the way is very affordable compared to other states. People are real friendly and really go out of their way to help out. Hope you make a good transition. Lots of luck to you and your family. RGV
Ya say you wanna know about the "scene"? Let's just say that there is ALOT of great people here doing great shit w/ these old heaps. If ya know where to look Come on down. We'd be happy to show ya around. Wait. Did I just tell another Californian to come to Texas Ahh hell, you are a HAMBer so you have my blessing This place fucking rules. Believe me, I should know. You will love it here and you'll wonder whwt took you so long. Just get rid of that California license plate, be friendly, and no one will ever know you ain't from Texas!
thanks guys i might be out that way in november to see my friend paul he lives in phulger ville he from ca he moved there last year and loves it he has a bitchin 32 roadster its dark green pre war done car you guys probly know him so well see .wow i did not ryan moved there that place is going to be HAMB MAFIAOS sweet .late billy
I didn't talk to him but I was standing checking out his car. That thing is gorgeous. He was talking about how he drove the heck out of the flattie from CA to here. What's his name, I want to talk to him next time I see him.
I met Paul, his lady and his roadster @ Hill country Nostalgia Drags. Nice guy, very friendly, extremely talented, kick ass roadster, nothing newer than 1940 on the car if I remember correctly. This month there is a car event every weekend, lots going on in Austin area.
Austin sux- nuthin' but Californians here! You can actually find affordable housing in Austin, not just p-ville or RR. You just need to take a ride around. I know my hood off s.Lamar and Bluebonnet has a ton of rental houses with garages. I hear the rent here will blow your mind compared to Cali...
depends on what you do for work. If you're open to anything, there's plenty of jobs out here. Check out www.austinjobs.com
With over 300k people in Williamson County alone and an estimated 1 million new residents in the next 10 years to the Austin Area, I dont think finding a job is going to be difficult. I make more monthly here than I did for 6 years in SoCal.......just depends on what you do OR what you want to do. I think I35 is a drag strip, no wait, thats just an Interstate....buzzard or krupanut would know the answer to that one
Jimmy, You can come to my place too... Make it "The Austin Toilet Crawl." We spent a week in Austin while all the HAMBers were DRAG racing. We're looking at a few places in Dripping Springs as well. Anybody in Austin need a Technical Writer? I gotta find a job. Oh yeah... To everyone from Cali... Austin SUCKS!!! Don't move there. (I ain't moving there to live in East EAST LA or something!! ) -Phil
You make more in one month than you did in 6 years out here? What kind of dope are you cookin/sellin? Or did you take over some high-rent ho's? I don't care, just get me in on some of that...I'm packin my things tonight! I'll stay in the White-Fortier suite at the Cochran Inn till I find my own flop house.
Funny stories about Dripping Springs... The wife and I were viewng houses in the area. We'd seen some really nice ones. Anyway, we are touring this house and walk around back and they got a FUCKING Camel in their back yard!!! I immedieately degenerate into my best impersination of Cookie from Apocalypse Now and start muttering... "A fucking CAMEL man... A fucking CAMEL!!! Never get off the boat!" "'Never get off the boat' is goddamn right..." In the same neighborhood... We get out of the car and start walking up to a house and are confronted with some real ferocious sounding barking and a black and white dog appears lumbering toward us. I think "I hope that thing is on a chain or we are in trouble..." It became clear that there was no chain and the dog is barking crazy and drooling closer and closer to us. My wife and I both freeze up and are prepared to run back to the car because he doesn't seem to be responding to our 'Nice Doggies' and 'It's OK boys.' I tell my petrified wife to go back to the car while I fend off the beast... Then the dog apparently becomes confused and starts sniffing around when my wife backs away. Next thing I know the dog has turned and is barking in the direction of the "For Sale" sign. We had survived an attack from the Blindest and Deafest Dalmation in Hays County! My wife told the owner in all seriousness that we'd take the house right there if the dog came with it... He turned us down.
LOL, with 2 bathtubs and a storm shelter, I can turn out some good stuff in record time.....amazing what people will buy!Yea, it helps if I word things correctly, hu?
As a former Cali-person welcome to Austin I live in P-ville too. If been in Texas for 20 years and wouldn't leave. We have a 39' chevy and a 49' ford and I build hot rods. If you need help just hollar. Y-all
Nope, no drag strip IN Austin but Temple Academy Dragway ( little river) is only a short drive away. Unfortunatly they are closed until further notice due to a dispute between the owner and the folks who run it. There is another in Seguin Tx. ( called SAn Antinio speedway?) that is fairly new and I here it's very nice. Little River rules though and I'm sure it'll open again but probably not in time for the Kotinental drags
Headed to Austin in October for the first time. I'm working on a film project that will take me to San Antonio and Austin, as well as other locales in Texas. Any car events worth attending in the area in October? Also: Anyone know how I would contact Robert Rodriguez, the filmmaker who lives outside of Austin? AND...interested in filming individual traditional hot rods (and "rat rods") while in the area. Thanks, Ernest McIntyre, editor GASSER Magazine
Sam, you stallion, there's a dragstrip in San Antonio, pronounced San Antone....It's about an hour to 1.5 hrs from Austin depending on where you live. It's called River City Raceway.
