How about neither; I'm frustrated with this stereotypical bs.
But since you asked, definitely old Stax/Chess soul(Carla Thomas) or doo-wop(Harptones)
Metal(Turbonegro) or punk(Black Flag) when I'm trying to get nowhere fast...

    "Spent all my money,
    in a mexican whorehouse.
'Cross the street from a Catholic church.
Then I wiped off my revolver,
and buttoned up my raggedy shirt.
Shot the mornin' in the back with my Red Wings on,
told the sun it'd better go back down.
If I could find a book of matches,
    'gonna burn this hotel down."

Waits Rules, One of the biggest compliments I ever got during my music career was a guy who came up after a set and said, "Man, you must listen to a lot of Tom Waits!" Had to buy him a shot for that.

I'm kinda partial to the voice of that Singin' Stock Car Racer.

First record I ever bought back in '58 was "El Paso"

    Marty Robbins was the man.

I've seen guys like that creeping around the backwoods of West Virginia.

I thought Swedish people were better looking than that. :D

  8. I just watched a PBS show on ABBA the other night. Is that like Do-Wop?

About Tom Waits: I think I knew a guy a guy in college that said "This really sucks. I kinda like it." Maybe he said that about Billy Bragg. I don't remember now. I think it applies either way.

  9. STAX is where it's at!!!! If you're ever in Memphis you MUST visit the Stax Museum. It' sin the original theater where the recording studio was, tons of memorabilia, great displays, music playing, Isaac Hayes' pimped out '70 (?) Eldo, and the original studio has great outtakes and sound checks playing from the actual recording sessions. Man, the place just vibrates with history.. A Memphis must see.

ZZ Top wasnt the greatest band of the seventies, but they sure helped rock and roll endure thru a time a disco and all that other shit. Actually, it's funny this thread came up, cause those guys are playing the fair in Spencer this weekend and I'm probably gonna go. If I get a big enough paycheck, anyways.

I really like the idea of making a really bad post like this and then everybody
tries to develop it into something they THINK the guy means... :D :D :D

This is kind of a screwed up thread here.

I like Public Enemy and A Tribe Called Quest. I don't expect that to seem relevant.

There was a couple hanging out Dream Cruise week with a Z06. They sat out there listening to the radio very loud. They played the entire Mike Jones album followed by the entire Seger Greatest Hits. I was impressed by the diversity.

  21. Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys to get the groove on, then New Grass Revival to speed it up, Kentucky Colonels to put it into overdrive, Yonder Mountain String Band for when inspiration lags, Vassar Clements Hillbilly Jazz for kicking inspiration into overdrive, Jimmy Reed at Carnegie Hall to calm it down a bit, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones to amaze the jazzers in the crowd, Terry Allen to make the weird happen and Merle Haggard or Don Walser for the drive home.

Turn it up to the Spinal Tap level of 11, repeat as necessary.

Bring that punk rawk shit in the garage and earn a wrench thrown at your head. We're here to WORK, not piss off our parents.

    Your Mileage May Vary.

These selections range from the 40s to the 'oughts. Try it, you'll like it.

I have to disagree--While I love ANYTHING with a 5-string on lead, I am always into pissing off my parents.

SCOTS in the car for sure.

Bring on the 80s alternative- Depeche, Cure, etc.

(My 4 yr old daughter always requests A-HA "Take on Me" extended dance mix when she's helpin' in the shop...)

Mostly listen to Blue Hawaiians, Aqua Velvets, Blue Stingrays, Penetrators in the shop though.

I saw the movie "Ray" last nite- I gotta get me a cd of his.

Yeah I know. Mike Jones is the hottest new thuggy kind of rapper. I don't care for his music, but I appreciate the fact that the guy has the balls to be a rapper named "Mike Jones" and not something catchy.

By the way, I do love rap. I just don't like the kind you get from Mtv and BET these days. I prefer Jurassic 5, Common, Mos Def, De La Soul and all the classics like Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Biz Markie, KRS ONE etc.

Why is there a new "I like this kind of music" thread when we had that old one that went on for pages and pages? Why is this thread entitled as to suggest a rivalry between a decade and a long-bearded band? Why am I still laughing about the Gert Jonny picture hours later?

haha, i hear that. i played in a combo one time and sang a couple tunes at a show one night, one of them was "downtown" off the heartattack and vine record, did my best waits impersonation. couldn't talk right for a couple days after that, but the sheer number of people that asked about the song made it worth it. glad to know there are some other rain dogs on the hamb. rock on.
