Supply and demand in the area you are in is the largest factor. If you are going to get one out of a junk yard try to get one from a truck that they pulled the engine out of but still has the front end sheet metal on it in good shape to show that it hasn't been wrecked. A little more work there will save you headaches later. Actually I think you would only have to take the bumper off and unbolt the core support from the frame and then cut the frame where you wanted to cut it. I'd suggest as far back as you could and then trim to fit.
Even with the front sheet metal removed, look at the front frame horns, this will tell you if it had been hit......
I got one out of a pull-a-part junkyard for $250. They let me bring in a generator, so I used a sawzall to cut it off. The truck already had the engine and front sheetmetal removed, which made it an easy job. I wanted to buy a complete truck and sell the extra parts like others have done, but I didn't have the room for it.
