Please School Me 60 Biscayne

My 60 Parkwood/Brokewood wagon El Camino conversion is in the shop getting a paint job. I want to have the windshield replaced before it gets sprayed.


I am looking for the windshield seal/gasket and have a few questions.


1) Will a 59-60 Impala, Biscayne, El Camino gasket work (Convertible/Hardtop)?


2) Does it matter that I have chrome trim around the windshield forget the term used for that.


I have posted a pic, hopefully one of you gentleman can take a look at the windshield and help me out. My husband bought the car for himself, but after seeing how attached I was to it this baby became mine with one condition ... I had to learn to work on it.

I really enjoy my new hobby.

The seal will be replaced, correct. The company that sells those will have your answer.

TNN used to make real good seals for those. If not steel will have one. Be sure to tell them you have windshield moldings. Be sure to pull the windshield before paint if your going to change the gasket.

I went to order from Impala Bob's and they wanted almost $40 for shipping. I think it's a little absurd that they want that much to ship an item that weighs maybe 2 lbs.

 

if your having the windshield replaced..have the auto gl*** shop that supplies the windshield,get the correct gasket for the install

As stated, your wagon has the same windshield as the wagon/El Camino/sedan. Your windshield is approx 2 inches taller than the hardtop/convertible version.

Any GM 59-60 with sedan/wagon windshield has the same. Just make sure it is the taller gl***.

Best to remove the windshield before paint and clean up the window channel. Also end result will always look better than masking off next to the gasket.

I have had both 59 and 60 E Camino's and i can't recall details about the gasket for trim pieces, so can't help with that.

 

Thanks for the suggestion Gary B., but when we bought the car we also bought a replacement windshield from the owner. I've tried ordering the gasket from a local windshield replacement company with no luck. It's been 3 months and they still have not received the gasket.

 

I think the chrome trim goes on with clips after the wind shield is installed.So the rubber is installed on the gl***,then installed in the car.I could be wrong.The clips are installed on studs on the body.Good luck Jack

 

O.k.I just looked at the auction site,under 6o chevy windshield and they have many.Some as low as 39.95 that seem to be what you are asking for. Jack

 

Thank you for taking a look. I Just ordered the seal from carpartsdiscount.com. It says it is supposed to fit a 1960 Brookwood. We'll see when it gets in.

Which auction site did you go to? I'd still like to do some more research to see what's out there.

I ordered a windshield gasket for my old Plymouth from Steele.

I called them to inquire about a couple things, and they were
helpful. Sometimes you just need to speak to the seller if
there is any question.

 

The front gl*** goes in then the trim goes on separate, it does not go into the gasket but sits on top of it.

The upper trim clips go through the header and bolt in with nuts from inside, under the headliner and garnish molding. The Stainless trim sits in the notch and there are holes in the shadow for the trim clips with a long pin to go through, then you add the nut from the inside. Don't forget a dab of Dum-Dum on the clip to keep it from leaking through the hole.



You can kind of see how the lower trim sits on top of the gasket here, the clips are installed under the cowl vent grate piece..



On an ElCamino the back window trim goes on with clips that must be put on the pinch under the gasket. Not sure on anything other than an ElCamino

 

hey ....The windshield is a DW586 ...I just replaced mine in my El Camino........ I work for a gl*** company and we had 30 thru out the US..... the Front gasket I used is from Steeele and is for a 2 dr sedan/4 dr sedan or wagons ....and the guy is right a conv or flattop or hrtp is different let me knw if I can be of help

This should help with the installation..

 

The trim is seperate, it doesn't go in the rubber, there's only one windshield gasket for all full size Chevys.

 

Next time you want rubber...for nearly any Chevy, contact "Shemp" here on the HAMB (look up his user name in the 'member's' section)...he can get, and sell, Steele rubber cheaper than they can...and he can get Soffseal even cheaper...

...and Secret Squirrel, the HAMB is ALWAYS your bet bet for questions answered BEFORE e-bay or anyone else...!!! There's endless knowledge here...!!!
