Projects Best way to lower a '58 Chevrolet?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Scroat Bag Garage, Jan 11, 2013.

  1. I've been wanting to lower my '58 and have seen the drop spindles, but what is the best way to lower the rear (bags?). Plans include a repaint in tropic turquoise w/ ivory roof (pearl some ghost lace on the roof). Also, anyone make a cruiser skirt for the 4 door (not the same as the oe style rear skirt). This was a barn find off CraigsList, rusted floors, quarters and headlight tops. Had been stored since early 90's (Douglas County Kansas) and had a repaint in the mid 80's before I got it. (I know, not a custom...yet but I'm getting there).

It would be free (if you had the tools) to cut a coil off each of the springs and see where it settles. That's one of the ways the old farts did it.

Lowering springs and dropped spindles would work better but aren't free. :)

Don't the '58 Chevy's have coil spring rear ends,,simply remove a couple of coils. HRP

I cut 2 rounds off my coils and drove it that way for a long time... never had any front tire wear issues either... now it has juice... happy as can be... I do want to get drop spindles though as i would like a little more coil up front... control arm to frame banging is common with our lovely east texas roads... rail crossings and such.

oh... and to the cruiser skirt question... I don't think so.. cause the back door wraps so close to the wheel opening... I like my stock skirts just fine.

I took two rounds out of my fronts and it looks great but rides a little lower than I would like. My rear sits at stock height and I leave it that way because I frequently load the trunk for weekend trips and that brings it down for just a little rake.
That said, be sure you know what you will carry in your trunk unless yuo install airbags/shock to compensate for your loads.

Let the air out of all the tires LOL

  9. Clip the coils, I seldom clip more that one round unlike others.

Hey do you really own a garage called the nut sak garage?

  10. Porkn******, Scroat Bag Garage is just a few guys that get together and turn some wrenches on our old cars. Scroat Bag is a slang and one of those words I used to blurt out at an idiot and get a confused look back. Stupid ****nut would blair out of my mouth but used to start a fight when my selective tourettes acts up. I use the term a lot so it stuck. Calling around on shop space now for a while, looking for something in the 2000 sqft neighborhood to set up in.

As for the cut coils, did that years ago on another project, screwed with the ride quality and didn't know all the other options for the 58s. Was going to use the drop $pindles so I could upgrade to front discs at the same time.

Cruiser skirts are the way to go on a lowered car and on the 58 Impala's they are sweet, figured I'd have to get a set and fab them for the rear doors or make a set from scratch.

1 full wrap cut coil + a Quality shock will give you a fine ride. Otherwise a 2" spindle and a 1-1 1/2 aftermarket coil and a fresh quality shock. Rear a 3" drop coil and shock again good brand stuff= good ride.

drove mine every day for years on the snubbers---cut the coils--easy to replace if you don't like it
