I bought an OT Coupe DeVille back in September. The plan was to take the engine, transmission, and a bunch of other parts that I could use on my project and part out the rest of the car. I got the ***le with the car but with the plan, I didn't worry about getting a bill of sale.

It was after Christmas before I could work on it but gutting it went quick. I put the car back on Craigslist in the parts section saying that I'm parting it out but I'd sell it whole and include the ***le (you have to take the car to get the ***le). A week later, this kid starts texting me saying he wants the whole car. He likes the body style and wants to fix it up. He offered me cash and we haggled in text without him even seeing the car and he handed me the money right when he stepped out of his moms car. I showed him the car but he didn't seem interested.

He told me that his friend with the truck and tow bar got called in to work and he would have to wait to take the car. I took the cash and gave him the ***le thinking there's no way I get screwed in this deal.

Now it's a day later and he texts me asking for a bill of sale from the guy who's name is on the ***le. I told him I'd text the guy I bought it from and just then my father in law (the car is parked in the drive to his barn) called and asked if they were ever going to come get the car. It's almost like once he got the ***le he was going to abandon the car in my father in laws drive.

The guy i bought it from never answered so I'm going to have to fake a bill of sale for the kid and I'm starting to think he may never come get the car. He didn't seem crafty enough to trick anyone but somehow I think he got the best of me. Have I screwed myself?

He cant do much with the ***le without the frame or vin off the car I wouldnt think. Unless he is some crazy scam artist and tries to sue you for Tearing apart "his car" or something. keep your add printed somewhere just in case.......

How is he screwing you? He wants a bill of sale before he picks it up. Personally, I never would have sold a car not in my name. Little details always end up biting folks in the ***.

Dude, take some of the $$ and have the car towed away. As a machinist for 40 odd years I've often said engineers should have to MAKE stuff before being allowed to design it. This proves my point.

Okay, here's something not covered yet: How old is the "kid" ? Is he a minor or is he of legal age to purchase a major investment like a car on his own and sign for a ***le himself ?

If he IS a minor...his mom/parents could ask for the money back, especially since you are having trouble with the guy YOU purchased the car from, or, they could file a suit against you.

    Just sayin'...

So, you have the money & still have the car? Tell the kid to come get the car by a certain day or it gets towed off for s****. Or whatever you want to do with it. He is abandoning the vehicle. You aren't responsible for the previous owner's BOS to you. Your name would be on it anyway. ***le is good enough. He's just trying to avoid late fees for ***ling. Only liability you would have is if you claimed to have clear ***le in your name. Otherwise, the kid is screwing himself.
Second thought: Is your name on the back of ***le as purchaser? Then the kid would need you to get ***le in your name & then sign over to him. The only time I have ever needed a BOS to ***le a vehicle, was when my truck was from a state that didn't require a ***le before a certain year. A signed ***le is all you need. In Missouri, you have 30 days to ***le or get $25/month penalty up to a max amount.

Yeh....what the heck are you talking about?

  11. you still have the car and you have the money you asked for it ....howd you get screwed?

tell the kid if he doesnt pick up the car by such and such a date it will be s****ped then,

take the car to your shop take off what you wanted and cut it into little bity pieces throw it in the back of a truck and haul it to the recycler

i dont know what the laws are like where your at but here in ohio if you haul something that even remotly ressembles a vehicle into a s**** yard it HAS to have a ***le thats why i suggest cutting into little pieces

That's what I was talking about. Not that he screwed me but maybe I screwed myself.

    No.

I'd card him for cigarettes if I was in that business but he had his mom with him.

  15. What are your state's laws? New York it's not unusual to jump ***le and they don't question it, as long as they get their taxes and you put a reasonable price on the bill of sale.

I've also been in spots where I had ***le and no reciept, or DMV didn't like the bill of sale for some reason, and what I've learned is if you hold the ***le (or old reciept) up to a window and put a piece of blank paper over it on a bright day, it suddenly becomes real clear what the answer is. If this kid's not smart enough to figure that out, his problem. Of course if you need things notarized it's another story.

Tell him you don't have a bill of sale and to come pick his ****ing car up. You started a thread about and are stressing over a deal you made with a kid that got driven to your house by his mom? Hot rodding is for bad***es. Knock it off.

Study up on the abandon car act for your state, if you can use it in this situation, then move forward. I would do my homework then contact the kids mom and advise her of the laws in your state and maybe it will solve your problem. It's always better to use knowledge of your rights instead of idle threats, use honey, not vinagar....

    Adam is exactly right.

Your big mistake is in letting someone else - a kid no less - tell you that he wants something he has no right to. The bill of sale from when you bought the car is your business, not his. All he is en***led to is a bill of sale from you to him. That's all.

Tell him, gosh you're sorry, but the neighborhood ***ociation is coming down on you and he has exactly 2 days to come get that POS or they will tow it off and he is SOL.

Much easier to address all of the sale stipulations at the time of the sale (when it has to be picked up, condition of vehicle, paperwork, type of payment, etc.), rather then after the fact.
    Lesson learned.

I would drag it off to someone elses street and let the cops haul it off.
If he comes for it I would say I thought you picked it up when I was not home.
