This is a collection of old photos from the mid to late 50's from the collection of Roger Worley of Boise and the Gear Jammers Car Club. Most of the photos were of drag racing at Gowen Field in Boise and the Pocatello Drag Strip. Enjoy! http://www.pbase.com/gearjammers/idaho_hot_rods&page=all
We have a local rodder that has taken it on himself to save the photo history of cars in Idaho. He collects any photos from anyone he can to preserve that part of history. This is one of his efforts. Good on him!
That is quite a collection, even a shot of the "Gl*** Slipper" on the salt !!!!!! Thanks for posting.
That was when you had to have a Night Drivers License. Some of the cars must still be in a barn somewhere in Idaho.
Yes and if you were not in a car club you were a "squirrely character" According to the newspaper. I have heard all the barns are in Cascade.
What a collection of photos!!!...Idaho does not get the mention it clearly deserves with such a great number of hot rods, customs, dragsters, from a really early time...thanks for posting... (noticed that one of the newspaper reports mentioned Idaho's great dragster driver Harrell Amyx, who later went on to gas dragsters and tragically lost his life in one at Lion's)
Man, what a great flashback!! Those were some fine looking cars, and some of them were wicked fast too, especially for the day. Thanks for posting.
These may be of some interest to you Idaho history guys. The first is a 1954 letter to the "Gearjammers" sent to Roger Worley from **** Forbes, the NHRA Idaho state advisor, inviting them to the drag races in Pocatello. The second is a 1955 Pocatello Drag Strip program. Mick
Great link, thanks. I'v been in Idaho well over 65 years and never knew that history . We tend to keep things quiet around here. Jim , in Parma Idaho.
