I am between a box and rack may go with box have seen NEW reversed Corvair boxes on Ebay! Are they the right one:confused:

How or what do you do to the shafts to make them longer for FED application?

    Thanks!

  2. What you do is by a ross box and bolt it in place. If you are spending money to build why would to Gerry Rig the steering box?

If you look around a bit you can find a Sprint car box ( which is the same as an FED box) used reasonable.

Most of the Ross boxes you'll find are built for cross steer cars. If you can find one from an early International truck (probably up thru 1 ton) it'll function correctly with out reversing but the pitman shaft would still need extending. There are several different sizes/designs of Ross boxes but few would meet your needs without alteration. The Corvair is plenty stout enough for a dragster but it needs reversed and the shaft extended. I do both. The beauty of the Corvair over ANY Ross is the Saginaw recirculating ball nut. The Saginaw design is clearly superior to Ross or Gemmer.

do your self a favor and by the correct steering box used just for the fed. ross boxes need a lot of work to make them work correctly and covair boxes have the wrong ratio. fed and alters need a slow ratio for safe steering and handling covair are quick ratio..so are most ross boxes. I just went through this on my fed build. safe is better. you don't want your fed to dart around at high speeds' good luck.

  7. how much a box from MW i've used stiletto racks one with a flex cable from an early pinto the other i used dd and u-joints routing was a pain and was always in the way when working on the cars. i think stiletto made a nice box for feds and the price was reasonable

Stiletto racks have the proper ratio and are safe. Steering at speed is not something you want to hope will be ok.

The Flaming River company is reproducing Corvair boxes and I think they are available reversed and with quick ratio.

Yes we make both. We also do a dragster/altered/funny car racing specific box. Go to the Flaming River website and look at part #FR1550BU. I have a few different length shafts available if needed. Box comes with Pittman arm too. Call me direct if you need more info 800-648-8022 ext 113.

  11. Uh I was talking about a Ross Sprint car box fellas not a box out of a studebaker. They come all set up and ready to go. I have found several in the classifieds over the years and I don't doubt that another one will come up.

Lots of old boxes get the shaft extended and used in hot rods and I have nothing against that but if someone is going through the trouble to build an FED why cheap out on the box when you can buy a new one or a used one already set up.

As for extending the corvair shaft I believe that someone makes an extended shaft for one that all you have to do it install it, or if you are a fair machinist you can make an extension for the shaft already in the box and use it. It will need to be supported a pillar block bearing will work well for that.

A quick search for cowl steering will net a lot of modified boxes if one desires to go that route.
