I have a stock '34 Chevy with a Tillotson carburetor that leaks. I believe the Carter W1 was stock on this car, so will any W1 fit or do I need to find a W1-284S? There seem to be a fair amount of W1's around but I am not sure how they differ. This will be a driver so matching numbers are not important. Thanks. Kevin

The mounting flanges are different. I have 2 that won't bolt up to a Chevy intake. Best to look for one made for the Chevy.

Chevy 1934 stock carb was Carter W-1 284s (Master) and 285s (Standard & Truck)
In 1936 Carter recommended the 569s to replace all 1932-1936 carbs.

Other models that fit 1932-40s Chevy (and considered upgrades to Carter W-1):

    Zenith 28 (10354 A, 10355 A)
    Stromberg BXOV-2 A-19122 (14-17D)
    Stromberg BXOV-25 A-19123 (14-16F)
    Stromberg BXOV-25 A-19132 (14-16G)

Not trying to step on anyone's feelings, but as far as I know all Carter W-1 carbs have the same S.A.E. size 2 mounting flange (mounting bolt center to center is 2 11/16 inches).

Here is a link to an article that may help:

    http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/CarterChevroletW1.htm

There can be some issues with attaching the mounting linkage if using a later carb on an earlier engine. As mentioned by Road Runner, the 569s was used as both a factory and aftermarket replacement for the 1932~1936 carbs. The 569s was released in 1946. Basically, the 569s is a 574s (1946~1948 Chevrolet) carburetor with a 1932~1936 throttle arm.

If you don't mind playing with the linkage, the three best (other than the aforementioned 569s) of the W-1's to use would be the 420s (1939-1940), the 483s (1941-1942), and the 574s (1946-1948).

The 684s (1949 only) is an excellent carb, but virtually all of the parts for the 684s are made out of verypricium! Should you opt to ignore this advice, I have all of the parts! ;)

While all of the W-1's have the same base mounting (Carter also made a W-2, with the S.A.E. size 3 base); the later YF carbs had different (both size 2, and size 3) bases.

The number following the type (for the most part) on Carter carburetors identifies the S.A.E. size; but the numbers are off one size. Thus a WD-0 or a W-0 is a size 1; a W-1 is a size 2; and a W-2 is a size 3.
