Hey guys, I need some help removing the beltline trim from my 50' Pontiac 2-door. I've searched quite a bit on here and found a few posts, but having trouble. From what I understand, the side door pieces have stud/nuts at the front and back, and clips everywhere else. The rear piece that wraps around the back gl*** has studs/nuts around the back , and (I ***ume) a stud/nut where the piece ends near the front door. I can't for the life of me figure out where the studs are in the door. There's no access holes that I see, and physically no way to get up in there to get to one if there was one. Similarly, where the rear piece wraps around to the side and ends near at the back of the front door, there's also no stud that I see and physically no way to get in there. Are they all clips from the outside? Am I completely missing something?
Just removing to re-paint. There's rust underneath them that's staining the paint under them. Car is flat black and it doesn't look good with rust streaks coming down from the beltline. I'm still missing something. Looked at the edges of the doors and still didn't see anything. Do you have to remove the inner window frame? I was going to do that and check but didn't get a chance.
Ok, just went out and checked...again. Removed the inner window frame and still...can't find any studs / nuts. Looked around the edges of the door and peeked in every nook and cranny I can find. This is the beltline trim that is directly under the window. I'm either completely and utterly blind, or there is no studs / nuts and it's all clips from the outside.
the studs should be in or near the pinch welds on the door edges and then along the trim they have spring clips through the doors
when i took the moldings off my girlfriends 50 even with the nuts taken off the studs the moldings didnt want to just fall off the spring clips hold them rather tight
heres the best pic i can find of her door without the trim on it when i painted it maybe it will help you , feel free to checkout the album http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a148/69runner383/janets%2050%20pontiac/the%20new%20look/DSCN2555.jpg
My 50 Pontiac 2 dr sedan (fastback) is sitting here with all it's trim off - the molding under the door windows is held on with some special clips that I think were pt # 4114412 originally, I got mine from California Pontiac Restoration, their part # is 261024723317 (49-52 Belt molding clip set). CPR is very helpful with pretty much anything Pontiac.
Well I don't know if I have the oddball car, but I just went outside again to check it out. My front-most hole (the one near the mirror) I got to pop out. It's a clip, not a stud. I haven't checked the spot near the rear of the door, but I just don't see any place possible where you would have access to the stud/nut if there was.
Here's a pic of the clips I got from CPR and the actual holes (slots) in the door. The clip snaps inside the molding and the prongs sticking up in the pic snap into the holes in the door. Tough to get off. Apackage of 10 of the clips was about $15 with shipping.
The "spear" moulding behind the door has a small tab that takes a screw (inside the door jamb) and it also has some rather unique clips. What you can see in the pic is only half the clip, there's another part that attaches to that. They're around here somewhere, I'll see if I can locate them.
the rear trim that wraps around the back will have studs with nuts that you remove from inside the trunk. you need to climb in there and look up. not sure if your Pontiac is two big pieces wrapping around from door to door like a Chevy or not. if the wrap around part is seperate from piece under the side windows maybe you can just slide the side pieces forward off the clips.
That looks like what ratfink is saying, that you loosen the studs on the back and then slide the piece forward on the side. Those clips look like they slide to lock in. I don't recall seeing a screw in the doorjamb like that though. I'll check again.
