I am needing a little direction because I am coming up empty. I am hoping there is someone in here with enough knowledge that can come up with a solution. I have a 1946 Chevy 1/2 ton that I used a EZ Chasis kit on and it is now on a 1991 Chevy S10 Chasis. I bought a hopped up 283 engine for it only to find that it is a 1957 engine which has no side mount provisions. Does anyone know of any type of mount that I can use to get this engine mounted onto the S10 Chasis? I am sure there are gong to be a lot of replies telling me to just use a 350 but I am wanting to use this 283, one reason is it was in one of my buddies built it and had it in one of his cars and he has recently passed away. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
A lot of aftermarket suppliers have the old Hurst type of front engine mounts,,speedway motors for one but I suspect you will have to fabricate something to fit a S-10 frame. BTW,,a intro wouldn't be a bad idea. HRP
Google for "SBC Hurst engine mount", or search here, there is a thread that shows you how to make one "sbc hurst motor mount" . It is a plate that mounts to the front of the engine in the original mounting holes. Good luck
Ok I checked it out and it looks like I can do something with that. If I use that then I will have to make some sort of mod so that it will bolt up to the S10. I am a noob to all of this and I am sure this is a stupid question but how do I know how far forward or back to go with the mod? Do I just need to get the tranny lined up and go from there?
If seen some off road buggy builders use the front mounts rather than the side mounts. Home made jobs made out of steel plate. Or these kind modified as needed http://www.ecklerstrucks.com/chevy-truck-engine-mount-front-small-block-1955-1959.html
what transmission are you using? most front mount engines used a bell housing mount to support the other half of the engine. the side mounts, cradle, and carry most of the weight of the engine so the transmission needs only a mount at the rear.
You should be able to use the tranny mount as your guide to place the combo front to back. Just keep it square in the chassis. Or if you have another small block with normal style mounts you could mock up the front mount that way and then place the motor of value to you in there. Best of luck.
