1935 Dodge pickup trans.

1935 Dodge pickup (1st Half) 201 C.I. 16x4 wheels, Top speed 35 to 40 miles per hour. I will probably get some grief over this but I just bought this a couple of months ago. I hate to change this truck in some ways. I will be painting this a new color (82 corvette silver/green) I will be changing the wheels to 15x6. my question is if I change the transmission out and leaving the motor as is what would my transmission choice be for increased miles per hour 60 to 65 any help would be appreciated.

most transmissions are 1 to 1 top ratio uless they are over drive. You need to determine what the reared ratio is and adjust that to make any diffeence in your cruising and or top speed. Many trucks designed back in the 30's had differentia sets in the high 4's and even low 5's. This gave them hauling capability but limited speed. but since 80% of the roads in the 30's were still dirt or gravel top speed over capacity was not a concern.

changing to smaller diameter wheels and tires will make the problem worse. So first find out what you are dealing with for the rear end. A simple test is to jack up the rear so both tires are off the ground. The put a chalk make on the drive shaft and one on the tire. Rotate the tire by hand one full turn while counting the times the drive shaft turns. You will probably be in the 4 to 1 area meaning your rear end is a 4 something to one. Changing to a more modern rear axle, like from a Dakota, Jeep or Ranger will give you a more speed friendly set up. Most of then are in the 3.5 to 3.2 area, much friendlier to todays paved roads, light loads and speeds.

Why you would be painting that if it'e even close to how it appear in the picture is beyond me.

You don't say for sure what trans. is in there now, 3spd./4spd. floor shift I'd guess. plm 46 is correct about your problem is partly the rear-end ratio, but I can also tell you that the truck trans., 3 or 4 spd., is also geared lowered than the trans. out of the cars of the era. To keep it closer to stock, you might try and figure out if the 218/230 Dodge/Ply. flathead will swap in and I understand there are some adapters are available for the T-5 trans. I'd still look into a rear-end swap regardless.

Plym 46 is right. That rear is geared way too low. Change that out to something in the 3 to 3.5 range, and/or start looking for an old Mopar (mid-1930's thru 1950's) 3sp overdrive transmission.

With the flat 6, overdrive ******, and a 4.11 rear (The combo I have in my 1950 Plymouth wagon) you can do 60-65mph comfortably.

Also think about brakes if you are going to be going freeway speeds.

Was not sure of the rear end. I had thought about 9" rear and a T5 transmission. 3 speed man. in it already, Just looking at other options. 16x4 tires a little bit rough so I had thought about wider tires.

That is why I am on here, what is the best trans. to look for in the old mopar mid 30's thru 50's overdrive transmission other than the T5.

All the Mopars (except Fluid Drive) used the same Borg Warner 3 speed, but the O.D. was an option. You just want one that was equipped with the O.D. from the factory. It'll be the same length as the (non-o.d.)one you already have.

Truck trans are in may cases different length than the car trans. The 4 speed has the same top three ratios, but a stump pulling lower 1st. When not loaded down most would drive them starting in Second which would correspond to low in a three speed.

The truck bellhousing was different, but 35 was the 1st year of the fully water jacketed engine which will change bolt for bolt with any 23.5 in flathead to 59 in cars and trucks and through the 70's in military and industrial engines. A fellow has installed a ford Ranger 5 speed behind an auto bellhousing in a 37 Plymouth coupe. He is a member of the P15 D24 forum. You might want to look him up. there are a number of searchable 5 speed threads on that forum.

A 1973 Nova rear end bolted up to my '36 Dodge pickup perfectly. Width is correct, spring pads lined up to stock leaf springs.

A 9-inch would be overkill if you're keeping the stock engine. Maybe one from like a Jeep Cherokee or Wagoneer (whatever the small boxy SUV was called) would do it.

I'll echo what has been said. First find out what rear gear you have, if it is not deeper than 4.5 then one of the 'newer' 5-sp o/d units might work but adapter packages will not be cheap which ever way you go.
A 230 swap would liven up the truck some, but the rear gear still controls top speed.
As mentioned, put new brakes on the shoping list along with trans and/or rear axle.

Thank you all for your Help. I am at a decision moment on this truck it runs fine for know and I would like to keep it for now as a my shop truck a while. I hate to change it over from being original. just looking for a little more speed. I do like the flathead 6 and I really do not want to change it over from being original. My original thought was to change the whole truck to a 270 hemi with diff. front and rear. now I may change it to 230 if it does not hurt the truck any. I plan to keep this truck forever..... Giving it to the Sheriff when I die (lol)

An 8" mavrick rear, if you can find one, will bolt up with no modifications except drive shaft. You can get them in 2.79, 3.00, or mid 3's.

I'll echo all the thoughts posted on here over replacing the diff ratio's. The mopar flathead was good piece of engineering for its time and will still give good motoring if the revs are kept down. Changing the diff ratio's is the first postive step to take - if you had the hemi lined up whare is the rest of the car it came out of ?- 1955/56 Dodge's had a 3.5;1 diff ratio on automatics and this diff in your truck would give it a better versitility. If the gearbox is good then leave it alone - play with the diff ratio's first before tearing the ol girl too far apart. The 3.5:1 ratio will not unduly affect your take off as the low first gear will now be quite considerably higher
