Friend had a cheapo HEI distributor in his small block Chevy, after a short time flyweight bushings wiped out, changed the guts car started spitting after warm up and would just die going down the road. Installed old OEM points dist. with Pertronix trigger. Started burning coils, realized later they suggested ballast resistor or resistor type coil which we installed. Did not run their flame thrower coil. Car still runs fine at idle but after warm up get on the road and it shuts down. I suggested to him to get OEM HEI out of junkyard and try that---any suggestions?
Did you put a new points and condensor in the dist? Also i had a HEI that busted a flyweight, i fought it for a while, found a couple of pieces of metal under and around the pick up, it seem to be magnitized, so it stuck there.
Only 3 things I can think of; primary ign. Wiring issue...bad coil.....or defective/damaged pertronix trigger.
I would say get a Mallory unit for $99 and up off eBay.... or Summit Racing.... http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw...distributor+chev*&_sop=15&_osacat=0&_from=R40
If both the Cheapo Chinese HEI and the Stock Points dist with a PerTronix Ignitor both die after a similar amount of running time, all indications would point to something other than the dist - probably the coil, or possibly a resistor wire feeding the ignition.
You would just have to know my buddy, he haggles the folks at Mcdonalds to try and get a cut rate deal on a cheese burger-I tell him all the time you get what you pay for
