I'm hoping someone here might have the vin code for engine identification on a 70s granada. I've got a line on a few that I'd like to pull the drivetrain out of for one of my 50s. It's my understanding that they could be had with (in the v8s) either a 302 or 351W.

What's the easiest way to tell the two apart while they're in the car? I'd rather not pull the head covers on each one while we're in the field, but will if I have to.

    from nowhere...

easiest way to tell 'em apart in the car? The 351 is wider, the deck height of the block is higher, placing the heads further apart.
    Most 70's era Granada's I have seen had 302's...

    Simple enough.

Look at the front of the engine.

If the front cover is right at the edge of the crack where head and block join, it's a 302.

If the front cover is about 2 fingers below the head to block seam, it's a 351 W.

351's only were available for a year or two- maybe 75 and 76.
What's the 5th digit of the VIN?

I'm heading out next month to see a handful in a yard. He says he's got 4 or 5 v8s, so I'll look at each of them to see. Do you know the VIN code for the 351? That would be an easy starting place.

Thanks, between that and the tips for verifying it I should be able to spot one if he's got one. Either one would work, but why not start with the 351, right?

Nab the front spindles and brake hardware. Those bolt on to almost everything and
    are gone quick.

Some have a nice width 9" too.

  16. FYI - All the 351 cars I have ever seen were badged as Granada Ghia's and also had a disc brake rear end.

Here is all you need to know.... look at the distributor area. If it's a 302 the wall behind the distributor will be short...see pic#1

If the wall is tall, it's a 351W block.... See pic #2

  19. yeah i just wanted to point out that 351 w were availible in things other then a **** box granada

    like f100's, ltd's, mustangs etc

while your looking at the granadas check to see if one of them maybe a mercury versailes it might still have its 9 inch rear axle with factory disc brakes on it

Also I thought a 302 had the thermo housing attached to the intake, 351 to the block.

You're thinking 351 Cleveland. Different engine completely.

The only 351W Granadas I've seen were loaded Ghias with all the options, a couple of Monarchs too. I've pulled 9 inch drum brake rears out of '80 4dr Ghias with 302s, only that year for some reason. Granadas can be a good source for desirable parts.
