Help! My 63 Econo's wiring is a rat's nest from previous abuse. Trying to clean it up. Anyone have a scanned wiring diagram, or better yet..know of a source to get a replacement harness? Are Falcon harnesses close enough to use? Thanks
No Econoline-specific wiring kits, but Rebel Wire makes a nice, simple, cheap, Made In the USA kit. As for diagrams, Econolines are VERY simple and the shop manual has a full diagram. Brand new manuals are about $20. If you search the web, you can probably find a scanned version, or one for sale on ebay that you could peak at. FWIW, there are only, I think, about 3 fuses for the whole truck, and the fuse panel is part of the light switch.
Thanks Brother. I found original manuals for the van on ebay yesterday, and scored them both for $20. As well as the rear transmission mount bushing NOS that I'm gonna need. Now if I can only get my fuel guage to work... Mike
Ford gauge systems those years were about the easiest to work on. If the temp gauge works your half way there. Both gauges work from the same feed. Turn the key on, disconnect the wire to the fuel sender and ground it. Gauge on the dash should go to full (or above). If it does the sender is bad. If it doesnt you have a problem with power getting to the sender. You'll probably have to pull the cluster out to check further. That the CliffNotes version.
I put a rebel kit in my last one, worked well and was pretty easy to install. Unhook the wire from the sending unit and ground it. Then turn on the key and see if they gauge moves all the way over. If it does, you likely have a fault in the sending unit itself, if it doesn't move, the problem lies in the wiring or gauge. Good luck!
Right on..thanks. Yeah, I had the cluster off the other day. Popped the wires off the gas gauge...cleaned the connections. The gauge moved a hair from Empty. It used to go past half at one time. Just realized the Temp guage wasn't connected...previous owner installed a SW temp gauge to monitor the electric fan. Wonder if that has something to do with it? I will ground the sending unit wire tonite and see if that's it. More to follow. T-Bird Esq - Yeah, I just checked out Rebel ...which set up did you go with? I guess I need to do this ..these wires are hacked and brittle. Thanks Guys!
I think I used one of their simpler kits. My econo has nothing fancy except for the electric fan, relays, and elec fuel pump. I moved the fuse box to behind the passenger seat (so I can access it easily, open the barn doors and sit down), so I used the Rebel Wire rear mounted kit. That makes it a mid-mount rather than rear mount, but I wanted to make sure I had enough wire. Some experienced friends helped me wire the thing, and their only complaint was that some of the wires were a little heavier gauge than they needed to be... which is hardly a problem.
..so I grounded the wire from the sending unit, and the gas gauge went all the way up past Full when I switched the ignition..so I guess my issue is with the sending unit... Does anyone know of a suitable replacement unit for the old Econos? Maybe something out of a Falcon or Ranchero? Maybe something that works with some modification? TIA
I used a sender (and tank) from a 65 Mustang. 15gal brand new, about $100. I forget how much teh sender was, but Mustang parts are cheap. The tank is very similar to the Econo tank, but not similar enough to use the sender. To get the Mustang tank to fit, you need to move the filler from the top to the side. I just cut the necks off my Econo tank and had them welded onto the new tank. The stock Econo gauge reads the new sender just fine.
Thanks Brother...I'll keep this in mind if I have to go this route. My next step is to remove the unit from the Econo tank, and check it out. Hopefully it is something like a bad float, because it actually used to send half a signal when I bought the van a year back.. Next step is to sight match the unit to Falcon or something close..maybe get by with a simple modification to make it match.. If that proves fruitless, then I'll follow your lead.
i got a new brass float and a new square rubber seal for the sender from a ford dealer less than a year ago for my 64 nodoor.
Really!? The seal is square , or do you mean it's not a typical o-ring but rather square profile? Do you have the parts numbers handy? That ring is what's stopping me from doing it this weekend. Mike
The seal is definitely not square, at least it wasn't in my '65. The seal, float, ring, etc are all probably the same for all Fords of that era (e.g., Mustang). The sendeing unit itself, however, may be different for the Econo (and I'm pretty sure it is).
