I was just informed by a friend that if I tow a trailer, be it camper, car trailer or anything other than a small luggage trailer, that my historic car insurance does not cover ANYTHING if there is an at fault accident. So I called my insurance guy and he checked with the company and he came back with this answer. No historic, street rod or antique tagged car or truck can tow a trailer (other than a small luggage type). By doing so you void all insurance on your hot rod, custom or whatever with the specialty car insurance on it. I always thought that my car insurance would cover my '68 Scotty while being towed by my historic tagged car. Sounds like I was wrong? Anyone heard of this
Some Ins co's do variations of this, that's why its good to check with your co about hauling stuff, be it in the back of your truck or towing trailers. Most of the time its not covered. The solution is buy more ins to cover it. Hmmm...
Actually it isn't so easy as buying more insurance - it's more like switching insurance companies. No "historic insurance" company I know will even SELL you insurance for towing your trailer. I've talked with a few - answer is always the same - nope! The "Cl***ic Car" insurance companies give great rates because these cars have LOW risk. Towing increases risk/liability - that's why they don't deal with it. At least that's how it was explained to me.
Wow, That's an interesting question, Mike. While I don't personally tow anything with a collector-type car, I know folks who do. Surely hope that they have checked with their insurance companies. Guess it makes sense that towing anything would increase the risk-liability issue. Glad you brought this up as it should be an eye-opener for folks and maybe save someone from a lot of headaches....................Don.
Do you have cl***iccar type of insurance? They often have strange rules. I was denied by one such company because my daily driver was more than 10 years old. They said it was unreliable and if it broke down I'd jump into my cl***ic and use it as a daily driver and thus, not be covered.
My company will allow the towing of a trailer. Liability will come from the pulling vehicle and if the trailer itself is insured, then the trailer is covered as well. If I choose to not insure the trailer I can still pull it and if I hit something, the liability from the pulling vehicle will cover it. But each company is different so double check.
this is one of the reasons that I use "regular" local agent insurance (farmers) not so many weird rules and by the way, I do not run full coverage, waste of money if its paid for if its wrecked, and my fault, I fix it or junk it, all my cl***ics are daily drivers I don't own any "normal" cars dr
Sounds like the basic answer is to check with your insurance carrier. I always thought that the insurance on the towing vehicle covers the trailer. That is true on my conventional non-historic car/truck towing a trailer. However, with my specialty car insurance carrier it's not the same. Thanks and hope this helps someone from a nasty & sticky future situation.
I got a "Rider" from my Agent of my auto policy for a travel trailer too. $10. a year! Well worth the cost vs the reality if trouble ever does develop. Tow costs now are very expensive. Normbc9
Most guys don't drive their car or truck in the winter let alone tow trailers with them. My guess is if you are towing stuff with your cl***ic you should have it registered regularly not cl***ic or antique, to many ways the INS. Company can screw you.
Specialty car insurance can be full of all kinds of lopholes that make you not covered. you are way better off to have normal car insurance with a vehicle value agreement. You will still have to have seperate insurance on your trailer that is what you use to cover for accidents when you are towing.
we buy seperate insurance for each trailer, it eliminates issues like this and you can get theft of trailer also. contents of trailer is a more complex issue depending on what is being carried on the trailer,
What all companies are out there worth considering for collector car insurance? Here's one I was looking at: http://www.amig.com/CollectorCarInsurance.html
Thanks for bringing this up... When I finally have my COE road ready it will definitely tow things...
You would probably think differently if your "Cl***ic" were worth a lot of money. When I had my Deuce coupe It was insured for $85,000, pretty much what I ended up selling it for and I know I couldn't afford to just junk it if it had been totaled
They can add riders for certain stuff, like Normbc9 said. I guess it depends on what they're willing to do though. I had a rider added for daily driving for (2) weeks once. I have a neighbor who runs a large collector car insurance company, I'd like to ask her this question and a few more.
I just cot a call from my insurance rep. Had my 34 coupe & my 49 F 1 with Hagarty. When I wanted to cover my 64 Aladdin camper they would not cover truck or trailer. Shopped around & went with Safe Co. More bucks & $125 to cover the trailer. Less than a month later I will see another $250 on the trailer. Too much & not worth it. I am going to shop around again and park the trailer for now. May go for regualr ins on the truck. Any input???
I don't tow with my roadster, but I do tow a trailer with it aboard behind my Duramax Diesel Silverrado, whose insurance covers the truck and the trailer, and Hagerty covers the roadster. But I really need to raise the Hagerty above it's current $35,000. Plan to finish interior this coming Winter, then raise it a bit, maybe $50,000. I'm sure they'll want pics to go that high, and that's why I'm waiting till I put in the rest of interior.
