well, after trying for 5 months to keep my black plates. they said either you take the new plates or nothing. well not really but that's how i took it. since my truck is a 58 and it had 63 black plates. they said they are not original to the truck. i told them that since it's on the ***le and old reg. that i thought it would be alright. she said no. i asked if i went and got 58 plates could i register them. sure not a problem she said. she was actually better than the first lady i was dealing with. the first lady was going to send me away cause of a missing signature. so she called a supervisor and she cleared it all and i walked out with my truck finally registered after 10 yrs. oh well i'm on the hunt for 58 or 54 commercial plates.
Sorry to hear that Dante, I have a feeling I'm gonna be in the same boat soon as I try to reuse the plates on the Wagon.
i tried that too. she said that they wouldn't give me those #'s. oh well i might just do this. notice anything???
i don't think so. your not suppose to deface the plates.....i have a buddy that owns a business restoring old plates. before he does anything. he has the customer sign a waiver saying they are for display use only. that frees him of any legal matters. the plate i posted is one that he did. looks good.
for a '58 you need a '56 plate with a '58 tag. to tell you the truth i would rather have the '56 plates (yellow/gold with blk #) then the '63 plates. hmmm does your friend wanna do some '36 car plates. by the way the little blue tag on my plates is the 1960 sticker.
nice former white plate.........or blue. can't remember what year they stopped the white plates with the "california" stamped onto it (i think mid/early 90's), now it's screened script.
Dante, I hope thyat you kept both the black plates & the registration with those plate on it, because I was told the same thing when I went to register my black plate 69 Camaro, & they said that I couldn't run the plates. ****er looks like an outa-state car because of them. I later bought a 73 RS Camaro that had the blue plates on it in 1993, I used a DMV service tat mostly did all my Rods this time, DMV tried to issue the car white Reflective plates, but I said NFW! this car had blue issued plates by the state of california and that's whats gonna stay on it. Dianne @ Ton'y DMV Service in Monrovia 3301 Peck RD (626)447-2450, took the orig reg to the dmv office that she uses and with in a couple of days I was using the gennie plates from that car. When I got my blue barn fresh 34 3W coupe back in 96 the ****er hadn't been registered since 61 or 62, It was still wearing the 56 issued plates, I had all of the registrations as well as a pink from 1949, and she said lets just go with my last reg in 61-62, This was a State of California issued do***ent, It was running the 56-62 yellow/blk plates. Well low & behold this cars still wears her 1956 issued plates. It all depends on if you have the plates & the paperwork. It'll cost ya alil bread, but in the end you'll feel much better about the whole deal. Go see her & only her, she's been around the car scene for years & is very hep th what cars guys want.
thanks for the info.... here's my buddy's website. tell him Dante referred you. http://www.antonesgraffix.com/index.html
Cyclone Kevin..... yes i did keep the plates. i really didn't have the old reg. i just had the pink slip and about 20 forms the DMV asked me to fill out..... the first trip to the DMV the lady didn't want to hear anything i had to say. i had to get my truck inspected thru the DMV then CHP. they also wanted me to go get the truck weighed. made me jump thru so many hoops..... finally a buddy suggested another DMV in Glendale. well, they where a lot better. when i handed them all the forms from the other DMV. they asked why i had so many forms. they gave half of them back to me. i also spent money to get the truck weighed. this lady was bad mouthing the other DMV for not knowing how to read. all the info they needed was on the pink slip.... oh well, at least this lady was a lot better. sorry for the long read. to sum it up. yes i have the plates.
i thought about that but i was so tired of running around i just said screw it. plus the lady went as far as to go in the back room and bring out the books. she pointed and stated it all. she must have been with the DMV for maybe 20 + yrs. she knew her stuff.... maybe
Isn't that the truth. Everytime I go to the DMV, I always get different answers from different people for everything.
be thankfull they will issue plates. in the UK If you have no registration number or do***ents you have to have the car inspected by the DVLA (DMV equivelent) to ensure it is a (insert car) and it has to be substantialy one car so, in theory no buying a frame then an engine, then a body etc it all has to be one car as it came from the factory. If they don't like what you show up with and wont issue the age related registration you get in to a Q plate and SVA. If your car has a Q prefix on the plate it's cl***ed as basicly a kit car and will cost more to insure with a lower resale value. SVA means a super test and **** like anti burst door locks and specific radius on edges (so you don't hurt your self if you have an accident) and all lights have to have a european standard "E" mark on them so no early lights etc. Different DVLA offices will give differnt answers so you have to choose the more liberal ones, The only other way is to get a correct year registation do***ent, that will cost but at least you get an age related plate with all the benefits that comes with it (no emissions test for a start)
DMV's here are the same way. Tried to register a '71 Ford that came with no paperwork for a beater years ago, and it was notarize this form, notarize that form, every time you went there it was another form. Finally I bought a reg and a VIN tag off the door of one at the junkyard for $30. Then the motor started to knock and I junked the truck... Everyone kept telling me to go to the other branch close by, so thats where I will go on my '50 Chevy when the time comes. Supposedly they are a lot more liberal, just bring in the reciept, the VIN pencil etch, or whatever info you have and you get the non-transferrable for 6 months reg. We'll see -
Dante, That's the DMV office that Dianne uses, & yes, they do know their stuff. Did you photo copy the pink then? Because it has to be State of Ca. docs that will allow you to use the gennie black plates. No worries about the long read, what about my long write? Let me know where you're located in MP so I can stop by when I drop some heads @ Cook's on Monday, & I can further explain what I wrote. If you go see her, It should be a slam dunk! As for the other DMV offices, that must've been Montebello or Pasadena, lots of useless state paid people just filling seats there, I got my drivers permit @ the Montebello office 25+yrs ago. Got my license @ the Pasadena office, Now I try an stay away from there as much as possible, I have AAA+ and they know me on a 1st name basis. They don't like the hard stuff though & that's where Dianne comes in. Believe me, she'll save you the headache in the longrun. C-ya, Kekvin
i grew by USC. i used to go the DMV on Hill st. i'll never go there again. you can see people age right in front of you. yeah i went to the one in Montebello. that one's a hit and miss. Pasadena always has a long line. i'm just going to get AAA now. or i'll just let someone do all the leg work for me. i'll keep that info on hand. i know where Cook's is at. you can see it right off the 5 Fwy. i'm right off Atlantic just south of Garvey..... sent you a PM.
i was going to go there too. i was already on the fwy so i said screw it and i went to Glendale. you win some, you lose some.... you have any 1958 CA commercial plates?
here's a couple of old guys that sell plates: http://home.earthlink.net/~ajb44/ ken cheesman 818/241-6501 this one i met at pomona swap but haven't used him: http://www.davesclp.com/ some just plain info: http://www.alpca.org/ http://www.calpl8s.com/
i take it that in the state of california the plate stays with the car , not the owner? i never could understand why the tags would stay with the car. in our state if you want to run a vintage plate you have a one time fee of like $150 and you can run your vintage plate as an antique plate for as long as you own the car. there is all kinds of rules governing antique cars though, but most folks dont really get nailed by them.
Does that mean I have a snowballs chance in Hell of getting the Wisconsin DMV to let me run the '56 California plate I own on my '56 F-100?
