Call Sunset Cottages. They have everything from condo"s to Cabins.

We have used them for about 15 years. You need to call now. That town fills up hotels fast, during rod run. But I like the shades of the past in September. Its more of the older cars.

Heard they (the powers in the city) were gonna try to do away with The Grand Run, too much trouble. Not with us but with the red-neck locals.

They have been saying this for 20 years. It will never happen. They have ran just about every other show out of Pigeon Forge, but Shades and The Grand will always be there.

I know at Shades you couldn't hardly get out on the road for the kids in little jelly bean Jap cars and the red-necks in their 4-wheel drive diesel trucks. And I guess I'm one of them there red-necks just don't have a big ole truck anymore. We sat on the side of the road in lawn chairs and drank beer and watched them run up and down the road drinking beer. Wasn't so bad now that I think about it.

  9. Hey Gary, if you're going to get a place call yesterday. Just like BAD A said it fills up fast.

I think the rest of you guy's have the shades and the grand switched in your minds. Grand is always geared more to the '48 and back, street rod type crowd. Way more laid back than the grand run.

It's the grand run you can't sling a dead cat without hitting a tweaker in a tuner or a soot belching for wheel drive penis extension. It's always been more street machine than street rod oriented.

  10. Nope,,your wrong,,

BTW,,the idiots show up at both shows.HRP

  11. Wouldn't be the first time :D so I'm okay with you thinking I'm wrong.

Yep, the idiots show up at both but they are far more conecentrated at the Grand Run and have been ever since the split.

If you're planning on pulling a trailer to a cabin ask questions about the location before renting...they are all over the place as far as access. We stayed in one that was nothing more than a subdivision made up of cabin-type houses, you would have no trouble there with a trailer. We also stayed at a couple that were up the side of a hill and the further you went the narrower it got...turning around at the top would not have been fun if you were towing.
    Good luck and enjoy!

Shades is always the first weekend after Labor Day. To me it's the best one up there. Way too high on everything but still cool. The Grand Run is put on at the "Dump" Grand Hotel which got voted dirtiest/filthiest Hotel in America at one time. I have never been to the Grand Run but have always heard negative aspects about it such as tuners, 4wds and a younger crowd. Shades has always had a bunch of older cars.

Since motel rooms usually go up so high during the show weekends, we've always stayed in the camping cabins at the south end of Pigeon Forge. There is Foothills RV park and last I checked a small 1-room cabin was less than $50/night. They also have small camper spots but you better call now if you want a reservation. There is another one right beside them thats just a little nicer, they'll tell you the name of it they are full when you call.

You would have liked the shades, better. Turkey run is OK but the Shades is way better. Plus the Smokies are great to cruz in.
