Have heard that the thermostat has to be at the front of the engine or it will over the front of the engine. Why would it not do the same in rear if it had to. I see that as its up front cause thats were the radiator is. Just thinking to much.
Most engines are set in the car with a rearward down rake, this creates air bubbles in the cooling system at the front, that is why the thermostat housing needs to be the highest point at the front
Ok wasn't thinking cause when you set a engine up some say to level it at the crab mount which would tilt the engine block up in the front. Thanks
I have put thermostats in some older import cars that were at rear of motor. Sorry don't remember what they were. Subaru has them in lower radiator hose as do Chevy Colorado trucks. In know all O/T vehicles.
Some flatheads have them in the middle. Don raises a good theory and it is probably as close to the truth as we are going to get on a thread like this. You also want the fill point for the cooling system to be the highest point in the system for the same reason, a place to burp it.
To further clarify - the thermostat itself doesn't care where it is, but since MOST of the motors that we use here of the V8 variety use a housing at the highest point, that is where my above comments come into play. MANY motors don't put the Thermostat in the top of the manifold like HAMB friendly motors - like BMW's that have them in the rad hose, and the new Coyote Motor, a**** many others.
