need some help Is a 55 Olds cross member different then a 50 Olds? i have a 50 Olds cross member in my 50 Olds coupe put a 55 Olds 324 in the coupe is not going well my thought is the slant pan is causing the cross member clearance problems drop it in bolt it up turns out it's not that simple
i have some good pics of a 54 olds cross member if your interested maybe compare the two. if your interested let me know.
I think all are different,when I put a 59 371 and jetaway in a 53 I had to modify a 59 cross member to use in the 53.
the 50 Olds cross member there an indentation on one side shown on the chair this side is straight across
looks like the one i have. if you need any other views let me know. mine is straight one side and indented on the other. my 56 olds also had the same cross member.
GOATROPER02 said the 55 Olds is different then the 50 Olds 50 to 53 are the same 54 to 56 are different then the 50 the 55 Olds slant pan is causing my clearance problem
did this swap 45 yrs ago and we used a 56 crossmember and had to take a little from frame x member to have clearance for the u-joint have fun Dennis
dug this up out of the Hollanders 23rd edition they used a 54 Olds hydramatic & 54 Olds cross member in a 50 Olds 88 so my 55 Olds drive train will be getting a 55 Olds cross member I Thanks ALL you Guys for the help and the last post from DWBlietz about the 56 Olds cross member so looks like i can get this handled with a trip to French Lake auto parts
Keep in mind, you need 55 rear motor mounts with that 55 trans. I am putting a 53 trans in my 55 right now, and I got screwed not having the right mounts. I am hoping that I don't have any issues with the crossmember. Good luck getting that in there.
Thanks for the heads up i bought new 50 mounts (black) on Ebay and had 55 mounts ( green) on the Olds 324 motor which didn't work with the 50 cross member when i get the 55 cross member i'm going to exchange the new 50 mounts for 55 mounts black mounts are 1950 - green are 1955's off the Olds 324 with luck i'll hear that bolted in the 324 Rocket 88 running this coming year when i checked mounts on Ebay 54 & 55 mounts were the same but not 53 one other thing they have compatible lists to check mounts to year of car there different year groups to year groups that goes for front & rear mounts you can check yours on the links below the new mounts are very well made 2 Rear Motor Mounts 49 50 51 52 53 Oldsmobile NEW http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Rear-Moto...Year:1953|Make:Oldsmobile&hash=item484d6569fb 2 Rear Motor Mounts 54 55 56 Oldsmobile NEW PAIR http://www.ebay.com/itm/310536089131?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
I finally got the cross member problem solved read the note in Hollanders 26th edition about installing a 54 Olds Hydramatic in a 50 Olds 88 they used 54 Olds cross member and rear mounts from a wrecking yard I went to French Lake auto parts Friday got a 55 Olds cross member used 55 Olds rear mounts and bolted everything together just like the article said when i lined up the 50 Olds & 55 Olds X member side by side the mounting angle looked different the rear mount compatible chart listed 49 to 53 Olds are the same 54 to 56 Olds are the same so that must go for the cross members being the same 49 to 53 cross member 54 to 56 cross member anyway glad that's over with
I have a 55 slant pan in Wastedchildhood. I had to drill 2 new holes and move it forward. You also need a 54-55 yoke.
Thanks for the info I like Wastedchildhood cool looking Olds drilling holes - are you talking about toward the front of the car? my 55 Hydramatic came with a 55 yoke so that was a plus other then the yoke what did you do to the driveshaft ? any cutting ? my 50 Olds came with the stock driveshaft when i went to the yard Friday there were some 55 Olds driveshafts available if that's a quick option
Yes to the front.Support motor under the oil pan. Install bellhousing motor mounts and cross member. The rear hole in crossmember should line up with a hole in the frame.Get a compete 55 drive shaft. This will give you the big U joint in the rear. Get rear yoke from a 56 Pontiac and your bullet proof.
Cool Thanks I have a complete 55 Olds drivetrain crossmember front & rear motor mount I can get the 55 Olds driveshaft & 56 Pontiac yoke at the yard Thanks again Great information
Hey, Just ran into that same issue. The '50 Olds rear crossmember won't let the rear rubber mounts sit right. Anybody have a '54 - '55 Olds rear crossmember they'll sell. Need it ASAP. Thanks MAGOOZ 206-763-2438 EMAIL= kmccand865@aol.com
