Carrozzeria touring. Thats a new name to me.
Its funny thou, all italian designs made oncommission for American auto makers are truly amazing, but then if you look at the cars we had in those very same yearsit almostlookslike itaint possible they come from thesame hands.
Im rather sure that money has a lot to do with it, and that they must have been truly excited of being able to go ape on a car rhater than having to restrain their creativity asusual...

The Italian people have a long history of art and design. Automotive is just one such field in which they have dominated. I had heard the term Carrozzeria years ago, but had not idea what it was.

Bonez, I have seen many Italian design features knocked off by Detroit; good example being the roof wing extensions on the '68 Corvette which came directly from Ferrari's years earlier design. Another is the so-called hooded license plate, which west coast car custmizers went crazy with in the late 50's. That feature started on a tail finned Ferrari from the mid-50's. Hmmm, tail fins?....I guess they knocked off Detroit on that one!

    Exactly.

Here's another BAT at Pebble Beach...not sure when it was built, but pretty sure it was before the '63 Stingray.

    Hey Bonez,

Carrozzeria Touring was around a long time- 1926-1966! They did design work for many marques like Ferrari, Alfa Romero, Aston Martin & even Hudson!
The reasons that the ***y/wild designs the Italian design studios didn't find their way into the Fiat, Lancia and Simca sedans of the 50s & 60s are many, but mostly political.

    Hey Tom,

The term " Carrozzeria " pretty much translates into coachbuilder, body builder or more correctly carriage/wagon builder, and actually predates the automobile.

Edsel Ford, Virgil Exner, Harley Earl, Bill Mitchel and many american auto designers were all big fans of forgien auto shows and more than a few design details were '' exchanged '' :D Some of the french, english and italian auto companies would adapt Detroit design idioms to their products with mixed results. Heaps of chrome and stainless, tailfins, two-tone paint in wacko colours, and dog leg windshield frames on a vehicle with a 90'' wheelbase all start to look like a dwarf in a tuxedo when viewed in daylight.:D

Yeah, carrozzeria is what we call the body shop.
I was referrin to everyday cars in my previous posts. Early Alfas or luxury sports cars are obviously an exception as my guess is that segment of the market never sees shortage of funds, even thou Enzo Ferrari had to struggle in the early days, but wasnt that the norm back then? Just pursue your dream no matter what? Sorry for the side tracking..

    Hey Bonez,

Enzo Ferrari started building and selling street cars like the 195 & 212 Ferraris to support his racing team and the production of his racing cars. Many of the design features seen on early Ferraris came from the race track and would be seen decades later at auction at places like Barrett Jackson, R M & Steele!

That red '49-'50 Packard roadster makes my naughty parts tingle:D

Once again , Tom , thank you for the splendid pics ...I prefer the interesting cars like you took rather than the sea of Mustangs , Chevelles and Camaros .

What sea? I didn't notice any sea!!

Seriously, I will stop and look at a really nice car of that ilk, but a good shot of a perfect stocker is still just a shot of a stocker. I look for personality.

  14. The selling of the Batman car was like watching reality TV. It was all staged. Barret Jackson Likes headlines and this was a scam to make national news. The car might really sell in a couple of years and everybody will be watching to see if the $4.2 million dollar price will be achieved again. This was a publicity stunt.

I could be wrong but I do not not think so.

  17. I think you can get the selling prices on Barret Jackson's website. I tried a few minutes ago and got a message that the site was too busy.

Regarding the Batcar sale, one might wonder just how much actual fraud takes place. It's difficult to believe that there would be one person that delusional, much less another individual equally off-base as to bid the price up against the other. Seems very artificial.

The optimist in me suggests that the winner's motive are pure; he simply wants to restore the Futura. I couldn't stand to watch even one minute of the TV coverage, but did BJ actually make the claim that it was the original Futura-based car or is it one of the duplicates? Or did either bidder even realize that it had a whole other value as the Futura?

Absolutely stellar coverage and photography, Tom. I have never thought it would be worthwhile to go to, but you have certainly put it on my list. Again - stunning - especially all the great shots of all the seldom seen high buck rarities.

I really enjoyed taking my little brother down there but what struck home was the fact that these actions aren't for the rest of us. There was a ****load of money being thrown around.

    Good News!

I just looked up the dates.

It was 13-20, so we can get a little breather from this circus.
