Abit of background first: 1950 chevy 3800 long bed 1955 235 with original transmission for the high oil pressure side of life 12v conversion in progress my questions are: 1. after rebuild, the fuel pump will not bolt up to the block that it came off of. I see how it goes in and the arm that engages with the cam. should i come up with a way to space between the pump and block? any suggestions. 2. we pulled the gear shifter and parking brake off the ****** in hopes of bringing the ****** out bolted to the old block, it didnt clear the cross member so the block and ****** were seperated. when the shifter/ parking brake were bolted back in, and we tried to move the truck, the rear wheels were locked up. ****** in neutral. had to engage clutch to move it. is there a change that when the top of the ****** was removed some of it was moved around. any ideas? 3. is it possible to prime the oil pump with the distributor out of it? long screwdriver attached to a drill? good idea or not? just want it to be good and oiled when she fires. any ideas are welcome.
you are putting the fuel pump in wrong, you put the top of the ****** in wrong. there are shift forks that need to align with slots.
sounds like the cam pump lobe is in the down position - turn the eng by hand with pump in loosely place & you will be able to feel the lobe turn until the pump will go into place--trans -- pull the top back off look into the trans -you will be able to see 2 grooves in the ge****t about 4 inches apart there are 2 (C)type forks on the under side of the trans top these forks need to slip into each groove for the trans to work
is it possible to prime the oil pump prior to turning the key for the first time? someone suggested pulling the distributer and turning the oil pump via a long screwdriver and an electric drill until oil flowed out near the rocker arms?
Yes, that's how it's done. Mark the location of the distributor body and the rotor, and also note the orientation of the slot on the oil pump shaft before you start so you can get everything back where it was. Makes reinstalling the distributor a lot easier.
when priming the oil pump through the distributor hole in the engine block do i turn it clockwise or counter clockwise?
It is common on the a 235 to prime the oil pump through the distributor hole with a drill and flat blade screw driver end. It spins clockwise. Have your valve cover off to verify that the oil is being pumped to the rockers. don
Thank you all for the help for my first rebuild. It has been fun and frustrating at the same time. Update. 235 rebuilt and in place. Most everything else ****oned up. One question has arose above the rest. Carb linkage from pedal to carb. My question to y'all is, is it a 2 pivot linkage or 1? I have some linkage but can't remember if it was off the 50' 216 or 54' 235. It just doesn't seem to fit right. Pictures are also helpfull. Also any good electronic references for carb install and troubleshooting? Thx for all your help guys.
