So, I am trying to figure out more on redoing my Model A's interior. I am now up to an adhesive choice. I will need to glue vinyl to panels and also glue the 4x4 vinyl headliner to the foam I already have, then the foam to the masonite liner that is already in the car. So headliner and side panels. I will not have access to a spray gun adhesive system. At the moment, my local choices seem to be: 3M yellow super trim adhesive (spray can) NAPA/Permatex Heavy Duty Carpet and Headline Adhesive (spray can) Weldwood Contact Cement (brush-on) Loc***e 200 Spray Adhesive 3M Super 77 a vinyl supplier also suggested 3M 80-which I could order in aerosol cans Advice/commentary would be appreciated. Thanks.
Perhaps I should clarify? I need opinions on the type of adhesive to use, not the style of upholstery you prefer. But, thanks for playing.
Do not use Super 77...I believe you want 3M 80, for vinyl. I used 77 and it held until the solvents got at the vinyl...never "kicked off" or dried. Contact cement held better...brushing on is a PITA. Hope this helps
I was a trimmer for 10 years. Vinyl can be a pain to glue down, but it can be done if you use the right technique and glue. The "fuzzier" the backing the easier it is to glue. For a permanent bond sprayable contact cement is a must (not the type you used in grade school on construction paper); I used landau top adhesive from Keyston Bros exclusively. You need to coat both pieces being glued and let it just dry to the touch--not bone dry, but not sticky-wet either. On vinyl with a smoother backer you should spray a full coverage light coat and let it dry completely, then spray a second coat and let it dry just past tacky before you work with it. If you lightly touch the pieces together you can readjust the vinyl by lifting it off. Once you have the vinyl where you want it, rub it down with your hand or a tool, pressing it firmly into the other piece. If done right you shouldn't have a problem with it adhering. If you're looking for a temporary bond then you can use a glue like 3M 77, but I would generally keep this glue away from vinyl for anything like a door panel or headliner.
Weldwood HHR Landau top adhesive http://www.yourautotrim.com/noname37.html and a cheap $18 Harbor Freight spray gun. Cleans up easy with mineral spirits or paint thinner. Spray can adhesives will not hold up to high temps.
I went to home depot and got 2 different kinds. 77 is great for light applications but the lepages was the best yet. Says it's there best and i believe it. Comes out heavy like commercial types and after a 5 min wait and spray both sides, it's on there. Realy good stuff.
