Just unwrapped my modified Hudson steering from Neal and "WOW" He goes beyond what is expected. Now if I can ever find a 5 window body to put on the ch***is I'm gonna use the steering on?????
We put one of Neal's boxes in Dan's tudor and have about 250 miles on the car now. That hudson box has been awesome, and the work was top notch. I hope to use one on my future project.
Larry: You know I'm computer stupid. When the day comes that someone comes to my shop and physically shows me how to post pictures I will, but until then running my mouth is as good as it gets!
krylon...Simpler than MOST think. Place your mouse arrow (the hand) over ALMOST any picture on the computer. I placed MY arrow (the hand) over 3W Larry's avatar. RIGHT CLICK...COPY. Now, his avatar picture is stored in the computer's little brain, waiting to be placed where I want to PASTE it. As I type this message, I'm gonna RIGHT CLICK and PASTE it right after this sentence, where the cursor is still blinking.Voila! Easier than puttin' a T5 behind a flathead. DD
ok, do you know how to email pics? you could send them to me and I'd post them...don't make me drive up there...
DD COOPMAN, Now that we can cut and paste Avitars, please tell us how to enlarge them? What type of airplane is in yours? Bob
Here are some photos from the install on Dan's tudor: Stock light switch and column tube Stock Ford Pitman arm, nut and washer
Bob, it kinda looks like the plane in the 50's show "Sky King"...a Cessna T-50? The Army Air Forces called it the Bamboo Bomber?
37Kid...3WLarry is correct...Cessna T-50! I only used Larry's avatar as an example. You can COPY and PASTE most pictures or images accessible on your computer. They usually 'post' as a thumbnail, which when clicked-on, gets larger. DD
Thanks for the nice comments...It's good to hear positive feedback. I made up a custom length 33-39 style belled column tube with a '46 and later pickup type upper bearing. Here's some pics the completed steering gear before I shipped it off...
Neal, Now that your conversion has become popular, has the demand for Hudson steering columns gone up? I wouldn't recognize one unless it had a sign on it, are they the same for a few years? I'm sure once I see one I'll remember what to look for, I can spot a 1920's Franklin box from three flea market spaces away. Bob
Bob - The Hudson boxes are not easy to come by, and I am sure the Street Rodder article didn't help my quest for finding more. Here are some visuals to look for. 1. 4 bolt end plate (all Gemmer II and III used the same style end plate) 2. 3 bolt frame flange with pressed in studs (Hudson is the only one I have seen with pressed in studs) 3. Sector seal held in place by coil spring. (again, Hudson is the only one I have seen that used this.) 4. Rectangular lug on top of box with fill plug 90* to top of box. (all Gemmer II and III look like this, but most Gemmer I have the fill plug at 45* to the top of the box.) 5. The steering column boss is larger than Ford, as Hudson used an 1-3/4" column mast, rather than 1-1/2" like Ford. 6. 1-1/8" diameter sector shaft. 35-39 Ford BIG truck boxes look very similar to a Hudson, but they are bigger and use an 1-1/4" sector shaft. Hope that helps...even though I probably shouldn't give my secrets away... Neal
I just fitted one of Neals boxes to my 5 Window,I have to say if you like to drive your car this a must have . It certainly lived up to the expectation, all I want to do is drive it ,and isnt that what it is all about.cheers David
David - Glad you got the box installed and are happy with it. Are those Red's headers? Did they clear OK? Thanks, Neal
Thanks again for the lead. I am currently building one for a 34....with a little bling. Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
Here is one of Neal's pieces or art. I got it in a trade and installed it in a '32 Chevrolet Confederate. No h***les, smooth and trouble free. Borgeson's helped me too online. Normbc9
Just finished installing another of Neal's custom box's in an original 34 ch***is I built for a customer. Fit like a glove, everything lined right up. Looks like it's factory. Wait a minute, it is factory, Neal's factory!
