While channel surfing the other night I happened upon a soap opera - oops - Hot Rod show on the Destination channel and they were using a 4" or so green disk 3/16 -1/4 thick to cut down the MIG welds before grinding. What are these and where can I get some? Are they that much more effective than other discs? Trying to cut down on heat input and time on panel welds.
You can get them at any automotive paint supply. Anywhere that has a decent abrasive selection. They come in 3" x 1/4" for use on a cut off tool. Most cost effective, and selective way I've found for dressing small welds.
Hotrodprimer, do you happen to have a part # for these at Tractor supply? Tinbender, I'll try my local NAPA paint dealer, but Taos isn't exactly the center of the fabrication universe. Thanks to both.

Hey, If your objective is to '' cut down on heat input and time on panel welds '' now may be a good time to teach yourself to gas weld! " Squirtgun welds do have their place in sheetmetal work, but can leave a panel with pin holes in it, and all the necessary grinding to level the weld bead can lead to hard spots in the panel that later lead to cracks. A good gas welded bead won't require much, if any post welding grinding, and leave the panel in a nice loose state, tension wise. Too, you side step all that damn abrasive dust all over the job/shop, and all that damn noise from grinding
Pimpin, I've got quite a few years experience gas welding sheet metal, chromoly (aircraft fuselages), etc. but find it takes quite a bit of time that some customers don't want to pay for. TIG'n (and hammering) my own stuff is fine, but I have some folks that want some patch panels installed on their OT stuff (I've got a 70 Chevy C10 in the shop right now for cab corners and rockers) and bring me stuff like LMC panels that sorta fit.....yes, you're right gas is a viable method (if Bill Hines was still around he'd say HELL YES) but I'm trying to find a solution for the situation where the MIG is the best compromise. Thanks.
