Painting my steering wheel.

Painted the wheel on my 36 and eventually it wore through. I'd like to paint the wheel on our 49. It needs something.
So what kind of paint are you using??

 

Looks good, I like the way you used both truck colors. Did you need to repair any cracks? What did you use if you did?

Yes I do get a lot of attention when I'm out in it. Oddly it's more from the girls than the guys, not such a bad thing I think!!!!!!!!

 

The paint I used is awl grip apart from the metallic red which I had mixed up especially for my panel about 5 years ago, when I painted it.
Yes there were a few cracks in the wheel and a big chunk out of the centre piece. The cracks were filled with epoxy resin and micro fibres to thicken the resin up.

I then sanded this to roughly the correct shape and faired the cracks in and keyed up the rest of the wheel, ready for paint.

I used awl grip ultra build which is a really high body paint. It's really thick so two coats of this, an hour between coats, no rubbing down between. This is a two pack product. Mixed at 1:1 and 10% to 30% thinners then sprayed on.
The next day when cured marker coat the whole thing and rub down with 320p paper until all of the marker coat has gone.
I should of primed next but didn't bother as I was going white top coat then red metallic then clear coat. I user the white as a primer for the red.

I put 4 coats of white on leaving 40 minutes between coats. Again awl grip mixed at 2:1 and 20% thinners.

Then using a fine scotch pad key the whole wheel ready for red, the red metallic goes on as it is out of the tin, nothing added.

Wait 15 minutes and time to clear everything to get the deep "wet look" shine.

The clear was mixed at 2:1 and 20% thinners. I put 7 coats of clear on leaving 30 minutes between coats and no rubbing down.

I'm not a painter so any painters reading feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on any of this. I'm a boat builder by trade, hence access to quality materials left over from jobs.

The horn ****on. This was done with out masking any of it up!!!!!

 

The horn was done in the same steps as the wheel, except the last stage. I put one coat of red over the white, then one coat of clear over the red and let it dry.
