Projects 29 Dodge Coupe going a different direction

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Choff, Oct 11, 2012.

  1. I think you can get away with full fenders and dual sidemounts if you build the rest of that car to suit them..By that I mean it'd look silly folowing the established "hotrod" look with flat or primer paint, painted wheels etc. YOu'd be forced to go with rechromed bumpers, all plated hardware, grille, headlights, shiny paint and plated/polished wheels. No rough edges allowed with dual sidemounts.
You've prolly seen the guy from Arkansas or Alabama, somewhere in the south with the 33-34 Chrysler Imperial 4 door sedan in white pearl. Has dual sidemounts, sits super low and runs a blown 2nd generation 426 hemi. That car must have thousands in chrome plating but that's what it takes to pull off a dual sidemount build.
Just my opinion and it comes from a guy who's car has no fenders/running boards, bumpers etc.

Yes-Golf Clubs, Can you even imagine during the 1929 depresion that cars were made with such a item for the rich to play golf!!!!

Just like some of the bigger cars have golf clubs doors in 1929 such as Dusenburg and others.

I am a golfer and my Dad was and my son is and I am going to keep it and get a set of older clubs that era for car shows.

    Rocky,
I could not agree more, kinda going that route, with a more deluxe car, Lots of stainless steel parts and chrome. I have seen a few cars with the dual side mounts.
Hot so much hot rod as more deluxe rich mans play toy with a Hemi.

  4. Yeah, and keep the gold bag door too. It'd gonna be expensive to pull this look off. Lotsa plating bills and expensive paint/bodywork involved but the end prodect could be totally classy...I see burl wood dash, leather interior, all the whistles and bells..an late 70s-80s-style build.
Not really HAMB friendly but a comfy ride you could drive [operative word being "drive"] to the street rod nats one weekend and drive to the local links the next...it'd be a car suited to driving across country like a new lexus.

That's a fancy option. I never considered a Dodge Bros. car to be on that spectrum of high-end. That's really neat. I'm glad you preserved it.

Golf Club door pics for your viewing pleasure.
I have about 15 hrs into restoring the hinges and getting the door to fit good.
May go with no outside handle and have an inside pull latch for opening the Golf door.

Just a thought, when this car was designed with the golf club door, the Roaring Twenties were still roaring. That came to a sharp halt about this time of year in '29, about the time that Dodge was gearing up to start making the 1930 models.

I looked on Carnut.com to try and get and idea of when those were dropped, but there aren't enough coupes shown to tell by.

BTW, I like the Hemi in a Dodge, also like the full fenders myself. It'll look pretty badass without them, too. Definitly swap the sidemounts to a restorer.

    Later, Kinky6

Definately keep the fenders. Looks like you've done a ton of work so far and it looks great! I have also started a project a 1931 dodge 3window coupe and will also be using a 331 hemi. Will post it soon.

Love the chop and the fenders. Not every traditional car has to be fenderless. The hemi looks great also. Build it the way you like. Do your rear fenders have ribs down the center like bbrroowwnn's car?

A status symbol like that golf club door should have a nice handle to highlight it (IMO). Nice car! I like those era cars with items like sidemounts and golf club compartments.

This 29 Stutz has been inspiration for my build since I saw pics of this car a while back. A true hot rod looking big car for the year.
My frame has been streched 6" to make the 29 Dodge with a wheel base of 118", Long an low!!!

    hallrods,
Thanks, And I do like the ride your working on, hope to see you soon at some local shows next year with your ride.
Yes the back fenders have the same rib feature on them, They are original to the car, they need more work than the front I recently bought.

If I ever redo my avatar '27 Dodge I would do it like yours. I started mine as a restored car and midstream I turned it into a resto rod. Mine is Mopar also 360 with a 727

Been working on getting the Hemi clean and painted, Soon I will be going back to working on the car drivers door.
Worked in the shop this weekend, spent lots of time cleaning and painting parts to the engine.
What do you think of the paint color, Its VHT engine paint called "Cast
    Iron".
Took tabs off of the valve covers and got them polished a bit.

Its 13 below zero this morning, holy shit its cold!!!!

  20. Love the Coupe! I'm building a '29 Chrylser 5w Coupe with a very similar plan. Already have a 354 HEMI built and ready to go. I'm planning on going fenderless and installing a slide back rag top.

I didn't know the Dodge built a coupe with the golf club door. I thought that was reserved for the Chrysler's, as they were marketed as more of a High-End Gentleman's car.[IMG][IMG]

Got more painting done on the Hemi last night. Thinking of chrome fan, valve covers and stainless steel headers next.
Need to get back on the car body welding and working on the drivers door.
The Hemi is more fun to work on then body welding!!!

Nice to see a few Dodges, much more comfortable than a Ford, has leg room for us tall guys.

  27. Love seeing the pics of the 29 Dodge and Plymouth coupes out there. Gets me jacked up to start on my 29 Plymouth coupe this winter!

I also have a 354 HEMI built and ready to drop between the frame rails of my coupe. Still trying to decide which tranny to run. Thinking of a Super T-10 4 speed with a conversion plate from Hot Heads.

Dodges and Plymouths are great and much bigger inside also!!

Just started getting the rear fenders fitted to the body because of the channel 3" the fenders have to come up on the body 3".

Hoping to get the body in Expoxy Primer next month.

I have been making progress on the rear fenders having to move them up on the body because of the Channel, Trying to figure a way to mount them to the body, Last nite measured for new 16 ga running board.

Included Picture took last nite-had to PDF it would not load normal
